I know the title, obviously, but I can't remember which author wrote it (there are so many with this title!). It was an 80s or 90s book, and the character was named Didi...:D

Possibly Just One Friend? The protagonist's name is Dory, though, and I can't remember if it was explicitly said that she had Down Syndrome, or just inferred.
