The world is facing huge environmental damage and eventual destruction. Humanity is pretty doomed - unless they can change the past. A group of just a few people is sent back to ancient south america, to alter the course of history.

I think they mean to cause South America to invade Europe eventually, rather than the other way around. Not sure about that.

When they do, it means that the future they came from, and all their friends and family, suddenly cease to exist. But they do it anyway, so humanity can survive.

I think the main character, or one of the main characters, was a woman.
