Allison (inconceivably) Mistress of the Art of Death (Book 1) by Ariana Franklin The Serpent's Tale (Mistress of the Art of Death, Book 2) by Ariana Franklin Grave Goods (Mistress of the Art of Death, Book 3) by Ariana Franklin

Those are the 3 books of the series so far, I have only read the first...thought it was pretty good. Anyone else read them?

(I'm not sure if they belong in forensics, but one of the best parts of the story in my opinion is that it IS a very early look at forensics)

MBP I've read these and I really love this series. The 1st & 3rd were great; 2nd was a bit weaker but still good. These are a bit grittier than most medieval mysteries. The main character has been trained in a foreign medical school, so she has more advanced knowledge than most of the English, and her status as outsider gives her a unique perspective on English society.

There's a 4th, [Book: Relics of the Dead], due out in mid-August - I can't wait for that one!

Teresa (teresainohio) Just added that to my read shelf, Great to see how they did it before all the bells and whistles of modern science

I also Recommend Reichs KathyYes she does the BONES series on Tv BUT the 2 are not very closely related, the BONES series seems to be early in her lif and the books are later since the character has a grown daughter

Kathy (readr4ever) | 236 comments OMG, MBP I didn't realize that a 4th Adelia Aguilar novel was due out so soon. I just finished Grave Goods and loved it. This series is one of my new favorites, started it last spring. Equally as compelling is Franklin's stand alone book City of Shadows A Novel of Suspense--just fantastic. I haven't read anything by Franklin under her other pseudonyms.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments A fourth one is due out this year? Goodness.

What are Franklin's pseudonyms, Kathy?

message 6: by Kathy (new)

Kathy  (readr4ever) | 236 comments Susanna, actually Diana Norman is her real name and Ariana Franklin is a pen name. I thought she had another pen name, but I must have been wrong, can't find it. Under Diana Norman she has written;

Fitzempress' Law (1980)
King of the Last Days (1981)
The Morning Gift (1985)
Daughter of Lir (1988)
Pirate Queen (1991)
The Vizard Mask (1994)
Shores of Darkness (1996)
Blood Royal (1998)
A Catch of Consequence (2002)
Taking Liberties (2003)
The Sparks Fly Upward (2006)

I haven't read any of these.

MBP Thanks for the info, Kathy - I'll have to look for these. I have a copy of City of Shadows A Novel of Suspense on my TBR pile - guess I'll have to move it up on the list!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 236 comments I do highly recommend City of Shadows A Novel of Suspense, MBP. It is one of my favorite books. Let me know what you think about it.

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) | 98 comments Loved the first one in the series-- blends my love of historical fiction and mystery... unfortunately I tried to find the second one at our library and it's no longer available (not sure what that means)... hopefully they'll replace it soon!

Luann (azbookgal) | 47 comments Heidi wrote: "I tried to find the second one at our library and it's no longer available (not sure what that means).."

That means someone stole it or damaged it beyond repair or checked it out and never returned it - which amounts to the same thing as stealing it.

message 11: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) | 98 comments So, it's either been returned or they bought another copy because today I was able to access it online... and hopefully it'll be in my hands before vacation.

That's great! Sometimes people do return things after keeping them for a long time. Usually not the exact one you're waiting for, though! :) That's good luck on your part.

message 13: by Joy (new)

Joy I'm going to pick this up at the library today. I'm a fairly new member and am looking forward to a book group read :)

George Vassallo | 6 comments Gail - Try out my thriller novel Nelson's Payback. It's all about a wronged man who hunts down the financial crooks responsible for his aunt's death. Part of it is set in Florida. George

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I've had the first one sitting on my shelf for ages... leering at me...

message 20: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 236 comments Donna, you won't be sorry that you returned to the series. Hayes, stop its leering and read it, girl. You will be very glad you did. Can you all tell that I love the series? LOL!

Hi BunWat, I just ordered The Serpent's Tale with my Mother's Day gift card and I'm really looking forward to it.

My F2F book group will be reading Mistress of the Art of Death later this year and I want to read at least the second one by then.

BunWat, I have Taking Liberties, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Thanks for reminding me of it, as I need to put it on my summer reading list.
