i want to ask you about the ISBN and ISBN 13 and ASIN and what's the difference btw. them, are they imp. if I'm adding new books or combine editions .

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments The difference between ISBN and ISBN-13 is pretty straightforward: ISBNs are also called ISBN-10s because they have 10 digits; ISBN-13s have 13 digits. Most recently published books will list both an ISBN-10 and an ISBN-13 which correspond to each other. Most older books published since the 1960s will only show an ISBN-10 (from which a corresponding ISBN-13 can be generated, if you know the conversion). Prior to the 1960s there were no ISBNs.

An ASIN is separate from an ISBN. It's an id which is specific to Amazon in its role as an ebook (Kindle) and audiobook (Audible) publisher. Amazon has a large enough market share that they are able to publish books completely without ISBNs using only their own ASINs as ids. For practicality, Goodreads has added an ASIN field to track those books because otherwise they would have no ids. If you're adding a new edition of a Kindle or Audible book with an ASIN, you should enter that number into the ASIN field. You can also search by that ASIN if you're looking to see if the edition already exists.

ty for your clarification but another question and iam sorry for bothering u by my question....
1st : when I am adding new book good reads automotically add Isbn and Isbn 13 or iam manually should add them?
2nd: when I will combine two editions every one with different Isbn how the combination will be done?

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments I'm not sure I understand your first question -- are you asking if you need to include the ISBNs when you create a record for an edition which doesn't already exist in the database here on Goodreads, as you did with the book غزّة في أزمة from your initial post? Yes, if you know the ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 for an edition which you are entering into the database please do add the ISBN. (Also, if the edition already has a record which did not appear when you searched for it previously, you will be directed instead to that record when you try to save the new record which would be a duplicate.)

For your second question, editions of the same book can be combined when the primary author name on each record is the same. The ISBNs don't affect combining editions. In the original book's case, for example, the primary author name is Noam Chomsky and not نعوم تشومسكي or Ilan Pappé or إيلان بابه because all of the editions need to have the same primary author name.
