Absolutely! I'm actually going to create a new folder here in the group for non-monthly book talk so there aren't two called "general" and scoot this thread over there. But otherwise, go for it!

Outlander is on my list of things to read, so sadly I can't chime in quite yet, but I'm half excited and half nervous because I've heard both the love and dislike for the series.

Tenisha (tdsw) | 12 comments I'm totally with you Whitney. I wasn't crazy about it either but I pushed myself through it to the end. It didn't get better for me. It actually got much worse, there just seemed to be more and more gratuitous violence and I found an entire section in the final third to be unsettling and unnecessary. It seemed like the author really wanted to get a reaction from readers and it just put me in a rage for days. I already have the rest of the series and I'm not sure if I want to continue with it because from the middle portion of the book it just got worse for me. I really wish I could have enjoyed it as much as some of my friends had (the Outlander lovers who pushed the book on me for years), but there were too many things I found problematic that just didn't sit right with me and there were a number of times I just wanted to DNF it.

Maybe there are Outlander lovers who can explain the things they love about it?

Buhlinda Clark (buhlinda_clark) | 2 comments I tried this one too after meeting several people that were hard-core fans. I love time-travel and I live that historical time period - all the right thigs were there! I couldnt finish it, hated it.
I do LOVE the series on Starz - much easier to stomach even with the violence (I just make sure Im drawing or crocheting while I watch in case I need to not be looking at the screen.)

Jacquelyn I loved Outlander. I listened to the audiobook version though so maybe that helped? I was able to get through some parts which I found to be a bit slow. You really have to be in the mood for a slow long book though. I just picked up the second in the series :)

Eva (misseva) | 4 comments Awesome that I'm just seeing this thread ... so.

A few coworkers at the library told me I should watch Outlander since I love historical fiction. I enjoyed the show but it sort of felt like ... woman-bored-with-her-marriage-imagines-going-back-in-time-and-meeting-hot-highlander? Every episode ended with a massive cliffhanger so I had to watch them obsessively. Ahem. When I reached the end of the DVDs I had to know what comes next. So on Tuesday I started reading Outlander. I finished it on Friday and am now part way through Dragonfly in Amber. I'm enjoying DIA much more, actually.

Pros
- Love me some time travel
- Historical fiction
- I actually like Claire more as the series goes on

Cons
- Gratuitous violence
- I really dislike Jamie in the first book. And sometimes in the second book.

For the size of the books they are fairly lightweight and easy reads. I'm having fun with them, at least. Reading in ebook form is slightly less daunting.

I didn't liked it either. I also skimmed to find out what happened. It wasn't the sex scenes or the violence, I was quite ok with that. It just didn't catch me. I thought Jamie background history too much drama and all.

Perhaps I missed something too, I don't know.

I haven't read it yet so this is certainly not going to be a great contribution. I found out about this book whilst browsing through my TV Channels and didn't realize it was a book series at the time. So I watched it and later learned it was a book series and despaired because I love reading the books before I watch it's video counterpart.

As for the show, I quite like it, even with all the unnecessarily long gratuitous sex. I'm completely okay with sex scenes but they just make it awkwardly long. So try to watch it alone if you do want to watch it. I love how nicely executed this show was because I imagine it is hard to develop a story where someone is transported back in time. I've read enough fanfiction to know that these kinds of stories are rarely successful both in books and digital media. Admittedly, there's a lot of hide-behind-your pillow violence and sex content, but it's a lot easier to ignore if you're doing something while watching it instead of reading it.
