Help with a quote?

I remember a quote from the book that I really want to find, I don't know it word for word, but seeing as searching key words isn't working I thought I'd open it up the goodreads community:

Peri was thinking about how she loved Hugo so much because she spent lots of time with him, but the 'real' mother didn't love Hugo and just got frustrated with him all the time because she never spent any time with him. The quote was something about how you don't spend time with people because you love them, you love people because you spend time with them.

Any help would be appreciated :D
