The man forced me to watch as he ripped his brain to shreds. He then turned me to watch him kill my mother, pinning her to the wall without even touching her. Knives shot from the kitchen and stuck themselves through her head and arms and legs. I shook my head and cried through my gag as the man sawed her head off as well. I watched as the viscous, crimson liquid dripped onto the small wooden table below. Blood trailed over my family photos of the beach and the mountains.
While I was sitting in the small, dark closet I heard people bust my door down and start talking in what seemed like awe at the murders. I sat quietly, hoping they would leave. Silent tears streaming onto the hardwood floor below. As I cried and cried I heard something crash to the side, the table that was outside of the hidden door. The door opened and I saw a man in a black outfit with a golden badge on his chest. I ran to him and pressed my small, terrified face into his stomach, “They…” I whispered as I tried to describe what had happened. “It’s all okay now, don’t worry…” The man told me in a soothing voice. I looked up at him with a slight smile on my face and my eyes puffy from tears. “Thank you.” I whispered.
They led me out of the house and sat me in a large, black SUV with a dark interior. I looked up at the driver with my small eyes, “I want my mommy back…” I cried. He looked back at me with a sad face, “Look, sweetie, you are safe now. Don’t worry about mommy right now, okay?” He said with a slight smile. I nodded in compliance at the man’s soothing words, “I want my pillow…” I whispered as I stared at my house through the large, tinted window, “Can we get my pillow?” I asked quietly as my small hands brushed against the glass. The man shook his head, “Sorry honey, but you aren’t allowed in there. I can go get it for you, okay?” He asked as he stepped out of the car.
I sat quietly in the car as I watched the driver walk up the sidewalk to my house. There were people dressed in suits and people with large badges on their chests. I sighed and waited for him to come back with my pillow. The images of my parent’s deaths swirled through my head and I slowly began crying again.
I wiped my eyes and tried to smile at the man as he stepped back in the car, “Did you find it?” I questioned him quietly. The man nodded and handed me a small pillow in the shape of a turtle. I reached my little, bruised arms out and smiled as I felt the softness of the pillow. I pressed the pillow against the window and softly rested my head on it. “Sweetie, could I get your name?” The man asked as he looked at her with his bright green eyes, “My name… My name is… I don’t know…” I whispered as I looked at my lap, “I don’t know my name.” I repeated.
I slowly looked up at the man with a terrified face, “I don’t know anything.” I whispered and shook my head. Tears began to stream down my soft, rosy cheeks as I thought about my parent’s deaths. I looked back to the house, “Why is this happening?” I asked quietly as I pressed my forehead to the glass. “Why?” I repeated. My hands clung to the surface of the window and tears dripped down onto my leather seat.
I soon saw a woman walk up to the car with a sad look on her face. She gave me a small wave and then walked around to the other side of the car. I slowly followed her with my little blue eyes. I heard a click and then the door opposite me opened. She stepped in and sat down beside me, the only thing dividing us was the small cup holder covering the middle seat. As the car started moving she asked question about what had happened and who had done this but all I could say was, “Mommy and daddy got killed.” She shook her head as she asked me questions, writing down the only answer I was able to give. The driver began talking, “Cynthia, she can’t even remember her name let alone that she is so young. Give her a brake.” The woman slowly shoved her notepad into her suit pocket and crossed her legs. She looked straight ahead as if she could see through the chair and right onto the black, endless tarmac of the highway, “Where are we going?” I asked quietly. Cynthia looked at me with her large brown eyes, “Somewhere to keep you safe.” She replied. (hide spoiler)]
