Clancy got a big boost when reporters noticed Ronald Reagan caring a copy of The Hunt for Red October on his way to his helicopter.

That book was originally published (only 5000 copies) by Naval Institute Press. Once Reagan came across it and started reading, it got popular and was re-printed by a major publisher.
