Re Growth of Soil, in fairness, Hamsun wrote his best work and won the Nobel Prize long before the Nazi’s came to power. His work was thought very highly of by a lot of great authors who were not fascists.

The same cannot be said for Camilo Cela who had no qualms being an informer for Franco's secret police, denouncing dissident groups and fellow intellectuals. He was also, not at all surprising, a raging homophobe.
His Boxall title was published in the 50's so there is absolutely no excuse either.
And let us not forget Gabriele d'Annunzio. Boxall has a book of his and no Elsa Morante.

I agree. She is not one of my favorite authors.

@ Karen - Bowen has a few novels listed on Boxall though.
I find I have to be in the right mood to read her though."
LOL -- If I like an author, I'll read all their books. Bowen I read only when she comes up on the monthly read.

Main Street by Sinclair Lewis. Not a bad read. A little boring in spots, but I think that was the point.... the place was BORING! At least to the main character, Carol.
Cphe wrote: "The Heat of the Day I think Bowen may be an acquired taste."I have had The Last September on the back burner for nearly a year now. I know 2020 threw me and I have not been able to focus on physical books nearly the same way I have done in the past, but I have never put one aside for so long.
Last week I finished Jack Maggs by Peter Carey
Finished this fine piece of writing - I need to read more from this author:Embers by Sándor Márai - 5 stars - My Review

Rabbit Redux

Rabbit at Rest"
I really need to read those. I've enjoyed the adaptation with Toby Jones on Radio 4.

Notes from Underground by Fyodor DostoyevskyI hope the other Dostoyevsky books on the list are a little more cheerful!

Unfortunately, no. :). Great reads though.

I suspected as much :-)
Finished The Birds by Tarjei Vesaas, a very precious book I probably wouldn't have discovered without the list and am so glad to have read.
I also finished Oroonoko by Aphra Behn.

I just finished Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler. I liked it more than The Big Sleep. Really liking this kind of writing. And I will say it again that his use of metaphors and similes constantly awes me.

Chandler is one of my fave authors!

Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth. I had been really looking forward to reading this book beforehand but found it a little hit and miss, a book in which the author simply tries to show just how clever he is and ultimately disappointing.
Pastoralia by George Saunders. Weird but interesting stories, I really liked it. And I will definitely read more of him.

I enjoyed it, too. I've heard good things about Lincoln in the Bardo.

Rabbit, Run by John Updike. Although the writing was well done and flowed smoothly, and the characters were solidly defined, I didn't like any of the characters, except maybe Ruth.
Cutter and Bone by Newton Thornburg -- a well-knit interesting story of a wanderlust, written before the days of politically correct standards.
