George (georgejazz) For me the Booker, Pulitzer, Boxall.....lists are a guide in my search for the next great read. The lists are not foolproof but certainly help in my search. Reading is a very personal experience and some writing styles are not to everybody’s tastes.

The lists act as a means of providing me with some sort of goal to aim for and to read books I never actually had the urge to read. For example, Frankenstein by Shelley, which I read recently and loved! I am kicking myself for not having read it forty years ago!

Absolutely.

Great distinction, Karina. I don’t mind long. I hate “unnecessarily long.”

Girl with Green Eyes by Edna O'Brien. I liked it better than The Country Girls.

For some reason I always thought it was too complicated for me and thus never read it, but I really enjoyed the writing

The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien
Did not enjoy it, certainly because I read it in english (not my native language), I probably did not understand the humor in it.

Aileen | 154 comments Sadly I had to abandon The Unfortunate Traveller: Or, the Life of Jack Wilton by Thomas Nashe. I could only find a reprint which had minuscule, cramped print, and the old English spelling. I picked my way through the first twenty pages, but gave up. Only the third list book I've abandoned but maybe I'll find a modern version one day and try again.

I've finished The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad. It's really about an informer rather than a 007 type spy. A very different novel from his Heart of Darkness. 4 stars. I look forward to Nostromo.

GW | 15 comments I finished At the Mountains of Madness, which thrilled me and gave me a fright.

James Spencer (jspencer78) | 258 comments Anniversaries: From a Year in the Life of Gesine Cresspahl by Uwe Johnson. On the list with its original German title, Jahrestage, this was only available in English in an abridged edition until last year when NYRB finally published it in a complete two volume edition. Longest book I've ever finished (still have the 6th volume of my edition of Proust to get through), I enjoyed every single page. One of the truly great works of the 20th century.

Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga
So beautifully written.

The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad
Enjoyed the perspective of the anarchists.

Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters
Great read. Boxall should have left this one on the core list!
And the audiobook was fantastic.

Faces in the Water by Janet Frame
Powerful indictment of mental institutions

I can't rate this book. It was difficult to get into. It seemed 90% politics and religion and 10% story and the characters seemed shallow. I'm disappointed, somewhat."

I wasn't crazy about it either--I was surprised it made the list. I've got a couple of his other books I'd already picked up, but I haven't been all that eager to jump into them after Snow. Have you read any of his others?

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 629 comments Just so I don't always sound like a downer, I thought Dracula was great.

My favorite has got to be Major Major Major. Poor guy, his father was insane and then the entire army seems to conspire to keep him utterly isolated when all he wants is to be friends with the guys.

The comedy is spot-on and adds a layer of surrealism to the whole thing. So when the horror peeps through the absurdity, it hits so much harder.

I just finished Girl with Green Eyes by Edna O'Brien. Somebody said earlier that this book was better than book one of the trilogy. I totally agree. So much more depth. But more later when the group read catches up to me.

I've got the trilogy packed up and ready for next month. This will be my first attempt at reading O'Brien.
