Which LIST book did you just finish?

Absolutely.

Great distinction, Karina. I don’t mind long. I hate “unnecessarily long.”

For some reason I always thought it was too complicated for me and thus never read it, but I really enjoyed the writing
The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien
Did not enjoy it, certainly because I read it in english (not my native language), I probably did not understand the humor in it.

How was that? I just recently found a copy of it at a book fair.

I've finished The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad. It's really about an informer rather than a 007 type spy. A very different novel from his Heart of Darkness. 4 stars. I look forward to Nostromo.

Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga
So beautifully written.
The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad
Enjoyed the perspective of the anarchists.
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters
Great read. Boxall should have left this one on the core list!
And the audiobook was fantastic.
Faces in the Water by Janet Frame
Powerful indictment of mental institutions

I can't rate this book. It was difficult to get into. It seemed 90% politics and religion and 10% story and the characters seemed shallow. I'm disappointed, somewhat."
I wasn't crazy about it either--I was surprised it made the list. I've got a couple of his other books I'd already picked up, but I haven't been all that eager to jump into them after Snow. Have you read any of his others?
Mercedes wrote: "This is my first Pamuk. I also have another one by him, but I'm going to wait a while, like a long while.*..."
I have a copy of his A Strangeness in my Mind; probably won't get to it for a while.

My favorite has got to be Major Major Major. Poor guy, his father was insane and then the entire army seems to conspire to keep him utterly isolated when all he wants is to be friends with the guys.
The comedy is spot-on and adds a layer of surrealism to the whole thing. So when the horror peeps through the absurdity, it hits so much harder.

Wow there's a lot I don't know about you! :-)

I just finished Girl with Green Eyes by Edna O'Brien. Somebody said earlier that this book was better than book one of the trilogy. I totally agree. So much more depth. But more later when the group read catches up to me.

I've got the trilogy packed up and ready for next month. This will be my first attempt at reading O'Brien.

The lists act as a means of providing me with some sort of goal to aim for and to read books I never actually had the urge to read. For example, Frankenstein by Shelley, which I read recently and loved! I am kicking myself for not having read it forty years ago!
