My thoughts exactly.

This weekend I finished Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell. It was a nice read. I didn't love it, but I liked it well enough.

I also started and finished The Yellow Wall-Paper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. A quick creepy and fun dip into madness.

I didn’t like the main characters but the writing was excellent.

Totally agree -- a book that needs rereading. I highlighted so much I finally had to stop!

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) I finished The Reader today (see also the February {2019} Discussion)

It's number six on my to-read list. You're the fourth of my friends to rate it five stars, so I'm looking forward to it.

Cara (shortpenguin) | 8 comments After getting side-tracked by a great number of non-list books, I finally finished a list book.
Journey to the Center of the Earth

It was okay. I was left wanting just a little bit more excitement, and I feel like it dragged in a lot of places.

I have finished Robinson Crusoe, and it's now stranded on the top shelf with my other finished books. It has been cast away since it is time to read the monthly read.

While I liked it, I wouldn't pick it as one of 10 books needed on a desert island...

I agree it was a bit slow paced and meandering at times. I read the Swiss Family Robinson as well and that actually was better

I finished Martin Eden by Jack London today. An excellent story and well-told, though he did belabor parts a lot at times. I read his White Fang last year (not a list book) and will probably read The Call of the Wild next year.

God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut
Always a fun read, Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors (I've been reading him since the 60s but somehow missed this one).

Finished off my short story trifecta with Amok and Other Stories by Stefan Zweig What a great story. I was in love with it from the first line.

Also finished A Room with a View by E.M. Forster. The first 3/4 was so ho hum. But it really redeemed itself and I ended up having to say I liked it.

Do you know about the (2017) Netflix miniseries? It's pretty good. I liked the book also.

I do know about it. My copy of the book was advertising it. My wife started it but couldn't get into it. So it's on my list for TV time when she's not around.

Hmmm. More or less the same here with The Handmaid's Tale. I watched the first few episodes on television but I just couldn't get into it and gave up.

Nocturnalux | 465 comments The Golden Ass.

When it was funny, it really was funny but it meandered a lot-deliberately so but still- and the level of misogyny was extremely high.

Yes, She said she had the same issue with that show. But I need to read that book first anyway.

Ella (ellamc) The Postman Always Rings Twice by James Cain - superfast and deliciously noir. I've never seen the movie, so this was totally new to me.

Sarah (sarahbethie) | 438 comments Finished Crome Yellow by Aldous Huxley.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 629 comments I finished up Pale Fire as well. I would agree with brilliant and multilayer, but I never did connect with it as well as I'd expected to. I think there's enough going on in this one to keep someone busy for a long time, depending on how many layers one wished to explore.

The Third Man by Graham Greene
The Third Man is one of my favorite movies, but I never realized that the movie preceded the book. This Kindle edition was fantastic. In addition to the book, it contains the full script, film clips, and photos from the movie.
