SOLVED. A boy and girl stuck in the human world, stuck in foster homes and trying to make a portal to get back to their own world? [s]

I read it earlier this year. In the beginning the girl drew a picture and showed it to the popular group at school hoping to fit in, but bad things happen whenever she uses her creativity (powers?), like lightning strikes or something. The boy and girl try to stick together even though they keep getting moved around the foster system (he's very possessive of her) and keep trying to open up a portal back to their world.

Hmmm, according to reviews it looks like the protag (fem) in Daughter is being raised by four chimeras ie: not in a foster care system? And in my cursory reading of 10 reviews, I see no mention of a portal(s)/other (home) worlds? It appeared that they were doing things among the mundane for... whatever reason - not trying to get home?

I love suggestions Tab, but are you sure this is the book suggestion you meant to give?

Ummm, living with her father (ie: this is her home planet)? Brought back from the dead? Didn't see any mention of powers (on the girl's part), esp. re: portals, lightning, or creativity...

So really? Tell me what points this is actually hitting on the OPs request? I mean, besides 'boy and a girl' - which pretty much means almost any book, anywhere.

Or is this just another (apparent?) suggestion for a good book to read?

In case you can't tell, I want to read the book the OP is describing. Hopefully it doesn't still need to be written :P

How big has your TBR pile gotten Just? I mean, you are almost as bad as I am about going, "OOHH, that sounds interesting, I want to read it when it's found." I think I've added about 500 books to my mountain range doing that. :o)

I've not yet added another thousand from GR. But it's getting up there. Of course, that's not a super-large percentage of the list of books I'm looking for.

Somedays it sucks to be a bookworm. Other days, I go, 'hahah, I've read more awesome stuff than any of you schmucks/norms' (I'm *not* including some GR peeps in that designation) It was nice when I saw the preview for Jumper (which didn't mention the movie's name) and pegged it out of the gate based on the relationship (because the other details were inaccurate in relation to the book) - impressed the people I was with, and I was like: 'You should read more.'

Hi Jessica. You should add as much detail as you can remember, as you never know what little detail will ring a bell with someone who can identify this book for you. You can add a spoiler tag to hide it if you want, but I this is one group where I don't think you need to worry about spoilers.

Jessica--there is a way to put in the spoilers and have the people who want to read it not be bothered by them.

I agree, add spoiler tags. Try to be descriptive as to what the spoilers will be talking about (a plot point, a secret, a plot-twist, who the spoiler will be about), so we can try and avoid them if we want. :D

But any scenes that're vivid, even if you can't remember names, will certainly help jog our memories.

There is actually a portal in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but it comes up later in the book and the protag isn't looking for it. Nor is she in foster care with a boy. It's what I would maybe describe as "older YA" -- fairly serious stuff, sex, late teen character. Is your book at that age level or younger? It sounds a tiny bit like Escape to Witch Mountain or something else by Key (more middle grade than YA).

Hmm, now that you point that out - it certainly does sound like the original EtWM Disney movie (well, with foster sys~=private school & portal~=hidden access to escape this world). Maybe the OP will take a look at that.

He is living in the foster system and he is trying to make a portal to get back to his real world. Yes she is living with her father but he dies so she does go into foster care (sorry to spoil that, if you ere actually going to read it but sounds like you weren't). Sorry if it wasn't what you were looking for but it was the closest thing I could think of.

Ahh, you can edit that with a spoiler tag if you'd like to keep that under wraps. ie; something like:

Cool on the suggestion/I retract my questioning of your suggestion :D. I just didn't see the portal mentioned other places. Like I've said other places on WtNotB, the reviews are hit-or-miss on GR (and Amazon - if, indeed, there even ARE reviews up online), and I like to know in what ways the suggestions are related to the OPs query, instead of just getting a link (when it's not obvious from the blurb (or first reviews) that there are correlations).
