Huzzah!Now we can flee Persia!*
*The Ten Thousand were Greek mercenaries who found themselves friendless and hundreds of miles away from home, and who had to fight their way back to Greece.
Thanks everyone :) I wish I'd managed to catch the 10 000th member in the introductions thread. Then I could have done the
!!Congratulations!! You're our 10,000th member!! This is for real! Please click on this link and enjoy lots of bright flashing adverts because that's what happens when you click on random links on the internet.
:)
Someone is doing something right.I wonder if it could be the moderators and consistently loyal contributors?

Actually, "300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans and perhaps a few hundred others, most of whom were killed" according to the all-knowing wikipedia. Everyone tends to gloss over the 1,000+ others on the Spartans side. I mean, like the 2007 movie wouldn't sound as good if it had been called 300 Plus 1,100 More.];D

Regardless of who was who and the exact numbers, since they were fighting against 100,000 + Persians bent upon conquest, another thousand or so defenders, even in an ideal defensive position (until the back door was discovered), could not win. However, they did achieve their purpose - they bought time.
We are currently at 10,999 members - next one will be 11,000!We've had 3679 members join since Jan 1, 2013. That's amazing. That's a third of the membership. It would be interesting to see a graph of this...
Hmm, the group home page shows "Members (10999)" but when I look at the members page, the index reads "(showing 1-30 of 11,002)", so I am thinking maybe they don't count the moderators/founder? Which should it be??

Wh..."Those are shown first on the home page, and not counted in the member section below it.
Edit: Nevermind I have many more than 3 friends in the group and it shows me 10,999 on the front page too.

I'm thinking it may be as simple as a lag between when the two fields are updated.
It looks like the members list may be more accurate, since it contains more people. And I "confirmed" that they are all there: 366 pages x 30 people plus 29 on page 367 = 11,009.

Also yay for hitting the 11 thousand mark!
Just noticed we hit 13,000 recently. It was 13,088 a minute ago.Seems it slowed down for the second half of the year. Not sure if the first half of the year always has more activity or if we have reached a threshold. Maybe we'll find out as people make their "join a group" New Year's resolutions for 2015!!
Michael wrote: "Seems it slowed down for the second half of the year. Not sure if the first half of the year always has more activity or if we ha..."I've been graphing our membership by join date, and I see it is more complicated than I thought. In addition to members joining, we constantly have members leaving the group, so it is hard to create an accurate picture over time.
For example, this thread was started on 10/5/2013 when Kim noticed we reached 10,000 members. But when I look at our current membership list sorted by "date joined", the folks who joined on 10/5/2013 are at the top of page 121. That would give us a count of 9,499 members (30 x (437-121) + 19 (the number of members on the final page 437)) on that date. So about 500 of the members who were in the group on 10/5/2013 have left the group in the past year. Luckily, about 3500 joined in that same time so we are still getting bigger, but it makes interpreting the numbers a bit tricky. I sure would love to see a time-lapse graph of the membership growth, with attrition, but alas, I'm sure all that data is in someone's desktop recycle bin.
Anyway, for those interested, I have saved a picture of my graph here:

It does seem to be slightly exponential for a while, but may be starting to be more linear now. I wonder how this compares to Goodreads membership overall...
Our 7 year anniversary appears to have been on 12/7/2014. So here's a toast to our next 7 wonderful years!
Thanks for that Michael. Something I'm interested in getting stats on is active members. I can see how many members have made x amount of posts but would have to look at each to see when those posts were. I'm curious as to how many people members post regularly as well as how many browse without posting, and then how many are inactive.
Congrats again, a new milestone! This is definitely the fastest growing club I belong to.To Kim's comment about browsers/posters, I'm always interested in readers' thoughts on the group reads, but unless I'm reading the book or have read it (and lately have not had much reading time), then I don't post, but I enjoy seeing everyone's comments.
