Vladimir Nabokov wrote his novel Ada, or Ardor: A Family Chronicle in English and published it in 1969.

At the beginning of the book, he included a family tree for the characters, and also included extensive notes at the end by his anagram alter-ego, Vivian Darkbloom. Studying the family tree and following the notes (referenced by page number) will definitely help in understanding this novel, especially the opening chapters which are a bit dense in both style and content.
