I picked that one up a couple of weeks ago. I loved the cover the moment I saw it. I keep meaning to wedge it into my sooner-rather-than-later reading plans.

Mike (mikenl) My order just arrived today with some nice goodies in them.

The Tower of the Swallow by Andrzej Sapkowski,
Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence and
Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb

Good haul. I have read Assassins apprentice trilogy and really enjoyed it to the point of immediately buying the next two trilogy especially. Haven't gotten to them yet thought though. I read prince of thorns years ago and really enjoyed and have king of thorns but figure I should reread PoT before moving on.

Mike (mikenl) Good to hear. Mark Lawrence and Robin Hobb were on my shortlist for books to buy, to see what all the fuzz is about :) .

Maximum Beans (maximumbeans) | 521 comments I've preordered these two books:
Provenance by Ann Leckie Ironclads by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Ironclads is apparently a limited run of 1000 copies. Also I bought a hardcover edition of this:
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) by Becky Chambers
I loved the audiobook so much I had to go and get a copy of the hardback. Unfortunately nobody has it! I've managed to order one from WH Smith, but there's a 4-week wait. I really hope they're not pulling my leg!

I just saw the Neil DeGrasse Tyson book advertised earlier this week. Look forward to hearing what you think of it - I find popular science books so hit and miss even from accomplished science presenters. It's really hard to get the level just right, making the book accessible but not patronising and detailed enough to be interesting without being too in depth for the layperson.

message 1566: by Siren (new)

Siren (boxilot) | 7 comments @Vinca, I just began reading it last night and since I was tired I didn't get especially far. Its a rather small and easily digestable book (as promised by the title :P). So far it seems like he expects a basic understanding of physics, but otherwise it is all written hilariously, and contiains quite a few funny tidbits of information I never learned in school.

So I didn't really buy, but I got some sweet free books from the library yesterday. (The library has a summer reading program where if you read 6 books, you get a $5 giftcard to a local business, a free book from a basket and a free book from the used book shop inside the library.)

I picked out:
Shadow & Claw and Cold Magic

I haven't read either author yet so they should be interesting when I get to them.

I've heard that he is very highly thought of by a lot of authors. But that the books can be hard to follow and that he does the China Melville trick of using words that the average person would have no idea what they meant. I've still wanted to read them though. Someday...

I was on holiday the other day and while wandering down a highstreet, I popped into a charity shop and picked up:
- A Redwall Winter's Tale (I have all but the last 6 or so books in the series and is a well-loved childhood one. I only discovered and added this short story to my to-read list the other day, and miraculously found it!)
- Tongues of Serpents
I then wandered on into Poundland (which sometimes has decent brand new books for £1), and got:
- 100 Flower Garlands: Step-By-Step Projects for Fresh and Dried Floral Circles and Swags, in 800 Photographs
- Under My Hat: Tales from the Cauldron (this is an anthology of witchy stories by authors such as Neil Gaiman Jim Butcher, and Holly Black etc.)

Always nice to run into things from your childhood. I'm a sicker for nostalgia and if I was rich would have a house full of stuff from the 80s and 90s.

My copy of Blackwing by Ed McDonald just arrive. Excited to get to it.

I picked up a signed copy of The Final Spark tonight at the book's launch party. It's officially released Tuesday. It's the final book of the series, so I'm going to have to savor it if I can. I haven't been this excited for a book since Harry Potter.

message 1593: by Margo (new)

Margo I just read The Buried Giant as I've been raving about it to anyone who'll listen! It is set in post roman briton and is told like a myth. It is a very deep and dark read and nothing is clear cut. It left me with food for though year when I will probably reread it! Kazuo Ishiguro is one of those authors I have always been nervous of but now I want to try more of his work. He has written in many genres.

I'm still looking through all the books we just got at Comic Con, and I think I finally got them all together:

Mania (awesome series)
Ones and Zeroes
Steelheart (already had it on Kindle but loved it)
Firefight
Calamity
The Loon (nice blood-splattered cover)
Spinosaurus
A Soul Divided

Many more books were drooled over.

Oh Margo, Ishiguro is so, so good!!!!

I loved Never Let Me Go - such a moving story for those who can just suspend disbelief and be moved by the characters. Do no research in advance because it's best without spoilers. I went in completely ignorant of the premise which was great because it added an element of mystery and anticipation. Don't even read the back cover - it gives way too much away!

I also loved The Remains of the Day, but that one is very understated as the main character is an old school servant. The pacing is not fast (sort of literary pacing if that makes sense), but by the end, it shattered me!

I haven't read The Buried Giant yet, but I bought it and have been waiting for a special time to treasure it. Ishiguro is one of those writers I can see myself eventually reading all of his work. His style and personality suit me - his writing is quiet but the veins of it run deep. I find that my more practical/rational friends hate him though - reading him requires a bit of intuition and patience I think.

I read Never Let Me Go -- it was all right but kind of slow. I don't think his style is quite a match for my brain. It's still excellent writing.

I know what you mean Audrey - there are several good writers I just don't "click" with. Ishiguro's plotting is a bit slow - it moves through the characters more than through the plot I think. But it isn't just navel gazing thank goodmess, some guy or other drifting around thinking about stuff ; it definitely has an arc. It just moves a little differently than a lot of books. I'm pretty sure if someone gave me a piece of his writing without a name or title, I'd recognize it as his. He's fairly unique.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 150 comments Magic Binds I'm getting a little confused as far as what number I'm reading at which times because it seems the publishing has been speeding up on this series. As soon as I finish one another is out but i usually like to take a break in between before starting the next one. so I hope this is the next one i need.
