I'm very excited for that one, too. I'm waiting for the entire Heroes of Olympus to be in a paperback set, too.

I found The Master of Heathcrest Hall at the library sale for 10 cents. :D It's the third in a trilogy. I loved the first one -- The Magicians and Mrs. Quent -- and still haven't read either sequel.

Kimonawhim (thebooksmademedoit) 10 cents for a book? Nice!

I was on a trip to the bookstore again yesterday, yes, this is sometimes how I spend my friday night with friends ;P!

Steelheart (Reckoners, #1) by Brandon Sanderson Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas The Magicians (The Magicians, #1) by Lev Grossman Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Kept my promise of wanting more Sanderson ;P And then of course the buddyread for #2 in Throne of Glass is coming up.. I don't really have a solid reason for The Magicians; it seemed interesting, and there's a new tv series for it that seems interesting too. Was wondering if maybe some people are up for a buddy read on that? Or has it already been a BoM? Lastly, there's Fangirl.. yeah.. what can I say? I wanted to try something different ;P Rainbow Rowell seems light and cute!

Mpauli I'm interested to see what you think of that Romulus Buckle one. I'm always on the look out for a decent steampunk book/series. I read cherie priests clockwork century books and the Tales of the Ketty Jay series as my first forays into the genre so I've been fairly spoiled.

I can recommend the books by Mark Hodder, starting with The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack (Burton & Swinburne, #1) by Mark Hodder , The Bookman Chronicles by Lavie Tidhar beginning with The Bookman (The Bookman Histories, #1) by Lavie Tidhar or Heart of Veridon (The Burn Cycle, #1) by Tim Akers by Tim Akers. And if you're into Weird West, the two Golgatha books by R.S. Belcher are excellent. The series starts with The Six-Gun Tarot (Golgotha, #1) by R.S. Belcher

Thank you! I've read six gun tarot and really enjoyed it. I will definitely look into the rest. I've always had a slight fascination with the genre since watching my brother play Arcanum: of steam works and magic obscura when we were younger. I've been meaning to play it myself but haven't had time

War for the Oaks
Sword-Dancer
Sword-Singer
Santiago: A Myth of the Far Future

I also still had a couple of B&N gift cards from Christmas so I picked up Retribution Falls and Zero World.

Then I bought a couple of books for my kids but I plan to read those as well:

Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos (for my 9 year old daughter)
Rot & Ruin (for my 12 year old son who loves zombies)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 803 comments I find that when I'm trying to decide what to read next, I will almost always reach for a physical book as opposed to picking something on my kindle. Nothing beats the feel of a physical book in my hands. At this rate I may never get around to reading what's on my kindle so I've pretty much stopped buying books that way. The DC/Marvel challenge has forced me to read some of my kindle books though so that's good.

Absolutely! It was a godsend when I was living abroad, but now I have all my paperbacks at my disposal I will go for them first 99% of the time. It does mean I have a lot of great books on Kindle that go untouched though :/ And many review copies...

Not really, at least I don't think.
Plus, as long as you have a cell phone signal books download really quick. I only ever keep a couple books on my phone at any given time because of the ease of downloading a new one.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 150 comments so I just got the audio of The Fifth Season.

i'm supposed to be saving money so I traded The Summer Tree for it. I do want to read some Kay but he's going to have to wait as I'm more interested in this other title now that I know about it.

My plan was to get my audible credits once per month and then use scribd to read new books instead of buying one ebook for 10 dollars every time I wanted to read something I didn't own. this is not working so far. Library doesn't work that well we used to have a system where we could check out books for almost a month then they changed it to two weeks which really messes me up. I do use over drive though.

message 935: by Andrew (last edited Jan 25, 2016 01:54PM) (new)

Andrew I feel like my preference is for the real book, but anytime my library doesn't have a copy of a book I really want (NEED), I tend to get the Kindle edition which is usually much cheaper, aside from used books. After sullenly opening the book and actually getting into the story, it is of course exactly the same experience!

Plus it has it's own benefits, aside from environmental and space-saving. I can set it down without losing a page, read hands free, easier to hold with one hand (all very beneficial when a dog demands belly-rubs!)

There are pros and cons of each, one thing that physical books will always have over ereader is lend ability. Me and one of my good friends like to exchange book and series we have enjoyed when we get to see each other and it doesn't require lending your entire ereader. But I do like it for the function of knowing how many pages are left in a chapter and being back lit and not requiring a lamp being on or wearing my super dorky headband light.

I've determined that I much prefer a physical copy, it seems that I just pay more attention to an actual book then a digital one. Not sure why but I just retain the story a lot better with a physical book instead of an ebook

Just wanted to point out that with the Kindle you don't have to loan your whole ereader. You just email your copy of a book to a friend. They have to have a Kindle as well though.

Same here! I can't explain why either, I just tend to be more invested in a physical copy.. and I just love the look of books on my shelf, and I love going to the bookstore to get new copies of books. It's the whole experience that does it for me, really :)

I usually have a few books on the kindle app on my phone, mostly things I've gotten free and want to see if the author is any good. If it can hold my interest on the phone app then I will give more of their stuff a try.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 803 comments Roger wrote: " Not sure why but I just retain the story a lot better with a physical book instead of an ebook."

I can relate to this experience. I just seem to pay better attention to what I'm reading if it's a physical book.

I also find that it takes me longer to finish an ebook than a physical one. I have to motivate myself to pick up my kindle to start reading again even if I was enjoying the story. I don't have that problem with physical books unless I'm really disliking the story.

message 944: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 641 comments I agree that reading the ebook takes longer than the physical book.

Picked two books up in the used book room at our library last night:

Both in really good shape and only 25 cents each. Can't go wrong.

Points for ereader would be the price as well as if you live somewhere rural or not near any book store or library but have Internet it makes it easier to access/buy books and not have to pay shipping if necessary or wait for them to arrive.

Easy enough to get most books anywhere with no delivery charge though and a lot of new releases cost nearly the same .

message 947: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I remember enjoying Stranger in a Strange Land as philosophical bender in the guise of sci-fi. Though it's been about 15 years since I read it.

It has a lot of love/HATE among reviewers, with most negative reviewers outraged by specific statements and scenes that seem sexist or backwards, or alternatively taking progressive mindsets too far into an absurd "free-love" destination. The problem, I feel, with these criticisms is they may be confusing things a character says and themes the book explores, with the actual message the author and book itself supports.

It is a bit all over the place with it's (pseudo) intellectual conversations, tangents, and destinations--some of them ringing true; others using semantics to "defend" outdated and backwards positions; others confusing the semantics of progressive thought to an absurd conclusion. I felt as a whole the book was about inspiring revolution and open-mindedness, while at the same time warning against being easily bamboozled.

I have yet to read it. Its one my dad suggested. I had intended to just check it out from the library when I was ready to read it, but for a quarter I figured it was worth buying.

I think with most of the older sci-fi stuff you either love it or you hate it. There rarely seems to be any middle ground.
