Dre (drewolf) | 22 comments Hi guys! I've only been buying eBooks from Amazon, but I was wondering if any of you, who lives in the Philippines, have ever ordered a book from Amazon. Was it delivered to your doorstep in good condition? Did you have to pay anything in customs?

Thanks in advance!

Jc | 8 comments Hey Dre, I've ordered a few books from Amazon before. I used Johnny Air Cargo. What I did was basically ordered from Amazon and had it delivered to their office in New York and picked it up at their branch in Makati after two weeks. It was in good condition since it was in a box. Shipping costs around P800+ up depending on the weight of the book you had delivered to them.

What's good about JAC is that you can get the item at any of their branches in Manila and doesn't go through customs. Unlike when you pick it up at the local Post Office they'll charge you with unreasonable Customs tax. (Seriously those guys in the Post Office will declare Customs tax like they were in an episode of The Price is Right)

Dre (drewolf) | 22 comments Thanks so much for the info, Jc!

Yes, customs tax is unreasonable, even gifts are being taxed.

Denise Wy (denisewy) | 4 comments Hi, I know this reply may be late but I just want to share my experience. I buy amazon books and have it shipped here via "my shopping-box" takes about 10-11 days to reach manila from your US address (my shopping box assigns you a US address) so far okay naman.

Raphael | 62 comments Guys I recommend bookdepository.com. Free shipping and, being partners, they basically have the same books as Amazon. The only downside is that you'll have to wait around 25 days before your order arrives, but I'm from the province so I'm sure it'll take less if it's only in Manila. So far I haven't encountered any problem.

I have yet to order through Book Depository. I've tried ordering from Amazon, but what I did was to ship it to a US address (a relative's address) and waited for the pasalubong box to arrive to the Philippines. This will work if you are not in a hurry to read the book you've ordered. :)

Nico Crisostomo (esseh) | 26 comments I have ordered from Amazon a bunch of times. With the standard shipping, it goes thru the post office. They will send a claim card to your address and you have to get it from them. They only charge Php 50.00 per package. No customs duty or tax. Same thing with bookdepository. Hope this helps.

How long does it usually take for the book to arrive here in Manila?

Hi JC. I hear they (JAC) don't consolidate orders...which means if you buy several books, you'd have to pay shipping charges for each. Have you ever ordered more than 1 book at a time?

Raphael | 62 comments Btw, anybody here ever tried ordering from Abebooks.com? They mostly sell 2nd hand copies in a very low price. I don't mind paying the shipping fee since book prices are seriously cheap, but I want to know the condition of the books and all that, if everything is worth the price. So, anybody here tried Abebooks?

Nikki Harriet (nikkiharriet) | 1 comments Hi! Has anyone tried ordering from Barnes & Noble? How much did you pay for customs / tax? I just placed my order and it's about $40, including the shipping fee. Will there be any additional (unreasonable) charges? I'm afraid our customs charge too much.

wanderinggene | 29 comments I'm curious as well about B&N orders. Dapat wala because books are considered documents diba? Ang problema lang medyo mataas ang value ng item/s, baka mag-kaching ang mga paningin ng taga customs.

EJ (edward_krit) | 21 comments Hi! I would like to buy from Amazon UK the three books of Mara Dyer series. The last book will be released on November 4, 2014. The total cost is EUR 16.77 or approximately PHP 1,000.00. It means that I can avail of a free delivery service (since the cost is above EUR 10). I live in Davao. Another detail is that I am not an Amazon Prime member. It means that there will be extra cost if the 3rd book is delivered to me on the release day. My questions are these:

1. What if I don't want the book to be delivered on the release day? (Maybe because I'm not in a hurry)

2. Will the 1st and 2nd book arrive together with the 3rd one? Or before that? (Since the first two books are "in stock")

3. Will the books arrive at the post office without unreasonable charges?

Mae (Jraex) | 2 comments hi all! im kinda new here, i just want to know when you buy books what mode of payment do you use? its going to be my first time to use paypal. is it ok?

message 15: by Pam (new)

Pam (booklovelounge) | 1 comments Hi, Mae!

Using Paypal is great. I have been using it since 2008 when I started working online. :)

To all:

I've ordered ebooks only in Amazon using a gift card given to me. I've tried The Book Depository many times and although they are slightly expensive, I do save on shipping (or I guess the price is already equal?). There's also Better World Books but the book did not arrive successfully. My guess is that it got stuck at the local post office. The postman in the area where my office is located got changed and the current one seems unreliable. Haay. I would probably recommend Amazon then Johnny Air (or Pobox.ph to lift off weight restrictions but they take longer - but unlimited books!!!) if not for the shipping fee.

Jeremy Roupert | 4 comments Importing books shouldn’t incur import taxes as long as it is for personal use. The Philippines is a signatory of the Florence Agreement and books (magazines, newspapers, etc.) are free from custom duties. To be safe buy books that are less than 12 in quantity in a single batch. One needs to comply with the terms “for personal use”.
