Char Ugh

Jon Recluse | 19 comments The man is a self absorbed clown.

He views criticism as a hate crime.

He accused me of being anti-gay because I don't like any form of sexual content in my reading material.

Char I cannot stand this form of condescension-it's insidious rather than overt, but that's what it is just the same.

message 5: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 19 comments I want to know when he went from pretentious hack to literary light.

I never got that memo.

message 6: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) I just left the Literary Darkness group. I could deal with the thread set up for the bashing of Lovecraft, even though I thought it was obnoxious. But I caught a new thread with a link to the Salman Rushdie story about his ratings of certain books here at GR. Anyway, everyone over there was so busy with submissive urination to the PC Police that they seem to have forgotten that everyone is entitled to their opinions of literary works. It was almost like they were hoping to gang up on him and ridicule him into changing his review of To Kill A Mockingbird to a 5 star review.

WTF is wrong with people that they think they are so spectacular that the entire human race should be remade in their own image? Why can't people be allowed to have their own tastes and beliefs without constant badgering? How does anyone benefit from this type of fascism?

Fuck Robert Dunbar and his minions of lickspittles.......just fuck 'em.

message 7: by Scott (new)

Scott It is certainly strange that anyone would think everyone has to loooooove TKaM. Just liking it isn't good enough.

Char Holly wrote: "I just left the Literary Darkness group. I could deal with the thread set up for the bashing of Lovecraft, even though I thought it was obnoxious. But I caught a new thread with a link to the Sal..."

There are a few refugees from that group here, Holly. Nothing you said above comes as a surprise to me. God forbid you mention that you read an occasional zombie book over there. Or even worse-question anyone on their views. Because you should just fall in line and agree, always.

Holly (goldikova) Randolph wrote: "Everyone is welcome, even if you belong to that other group. In fact I wish mister Dunbar would come over here and chime in once in awhile. Do you want me to tell you something shocking, I've nev..."

I've never read it either; mostly because a friend of mine found it offensive and insulting, she just hated it.

message 10: by Scott (new)

Scott I've never read it, but I've seen the film and I didn't like it.

message 11: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 19 comments I liked To Kill a Mockingbird.

I didn't think I would.

message 12: by Char (new)

Char I LOVED it. But that doesn't mean I think everyone else has to love it too.

message 13: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 19 comments Exactly.

To each their own, as long as they don't beat everyone else over the head with it.

Anyone else notice that this seems to be the tactic du jour on the Internet lately?

message 14: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) I'm going to go check and see if he has "unfriended" me yet.

Oh well, I probably deserve the censure of complete strangers on the internet for insisting on having a mind of my own. I just won't let them know that I will go on having a mind of my own and living a pretty happy and somewhat normal life without ever sparing them another thought.......they would be SO crushed. tee hee

message 15: by Holly (last edited Apr 11, 2015 06:38AM) (new)

Holly (goldikova) Yes, it took less than 24 hours for him to "unfriend" me.......classic!

message 16: by Char (new)

Char LOL He's so pretentious, he thinks it's us that have a problem. It has probably never crossed his mind that anything is wrong with him or his attitudes.
What gets me is that as a gay man he must have dealt with a lot of small minded attitudes. I would have thought that as such, he might have more of an open mind himself. I guess not.

message 17: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 19 comments He changed Illiterate Darkness to a private group when I was thrown out, because I reported him to GR for his repugnant tactics.

Did you? I never knew that.

Randolph, I think your blog post might have been how we originally "met". I came across it somewhere and contacted you about a similar experience that I had with the LD group.

I did. He started slandering me to other members, even though he only threw me out for refusing to read his book for the group read, so I reported him to GR.

Ronald (rpdwyer) | 571 comments All members of Literary Darkness should migrate to this group.

Ronald (rpdwyer) | 571 comments There was some discussion of _To Kill A Mockingbird_in this thread.
Another novel by Harper Lee, entitled _Go Set A Watchman_, is slated to be published this July:

David Brian (davidbrian) That's unless your moral compass is bothered by the exploitation of a vulnerable person, of course. Then you might care?

As for 'who cares who wrote it'. So, you wouldn't be bothered if it turns out that one of the Big Five was making a mint off of a ghost written deception, eh?

I take your point about the actual 'quality' of the work, but there are other issues of far more concern in this case.

message 23: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 19 comments If James Patterson or some other publishing house hack penned it, I have a right to know, and to decide whether or not I want to read and review the book.
The answer to that would be "no".

If Harper wrote it and didn't want it published, her wishes should be respected and I won't have anything to do with it. I'm against grave robbing and elder abuse.

If she did write it and gave permission, in compos mentis, I will probably read it somewhere along the line.

Who are the Monkees?

message 24: by David (new)

David Brian (davidbrian) Jon, I'm with you with regards your stance on published works. But: 'Who were The Monkees?' Tut! Tut! I hope you were joking?

message 25: by Tom (new)

Tom | 4 comments This has already been debated when Harper was attacked by critics saying Capote wrote the book not her. And I too love the Monkees

Nope.
I'm a heavy metal fan.

I also like heavy metal, but as a child I adored The Monkees.
