PepperP0t Moving to Space #: 52
Book Read: Brawn by Laurann Dohner (5th in series)
Date Finished: November 15
Rating: 4.25stars
Thumbnail Review: This installment carries on from the events of Justice when Brawn was selected to work with the task force. On day one of his assignment he arrives at his new home and finds she is sharing with the head of the task force's daughter Becca. During the wee hours, agents of Mercile arrive and kidnap them both. Caging them for additional experiments so that Brawn's body fluids can be sold to create exotic pets. Brawn was familiar from previous installments and he was just as personable for his own installment. Becca was a good warrior woman though a tad insecure and an apt mate for him. Both Brawn and Becca were told the other didn't want to see them opening the door to all kinds of misunderstandings and miscommunications and incorrectly read signals.Again, if graphic sex scenes or man's cruelty to different from him, this may not be the series for you, but I'm definitely on board for the next installment. Though I do long for both a new species mating and a new species female mating, I really like this series.

Read Book 2 in a series
Being Me (Inside Out, #2) by Lisa Renee Jones
Completed 11/15/13

4.25 Stars

This is a continuation of If I were You in the Inside Out trilogy. If I were you should definitely be read before this one. This book answered all of the questions that were left from book 1, which I had many. Lisa’s GR author page says that Starz network has picked up this trilogy. The main storyline of Rebecca was bundled and delivered to the reader, and it was refreshing for once to not immediately know who the culprit was until the end. I love a good mystery, and I suspected what had happened but was not totally certain.

Sara and Chris have a chemistry that is believable, but they are both broken and tend to do irrational thinks that provoke or hurt each other. Normally, I would not like this storyline at all, especially since Chris can be manipulative and demanding. However, the author did an excellent job on weaving the storyline into a romance/mystery that keeps the reader wanting more – at least this devoted reader anyway. I hope that the final book in this series, Revealing Us, continues with the search for Ella and bringing out Chris’ dark past.

Thanks to Net Galley, I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, which I did.

Roll 12 - Space #52
The Scholar (The Fall Series, #2) by May Nicole Abbey
Read: The Scholar (The Fall Series #2) by May Nicole Abbey
Finished: November 16, 2013
Rating: ★★★ 1/2

REVIEW:

The Scholar was a very easy book to read and I enjoyed the romantic aspect, though it played a much larger role than I was expecting I couldn't help but love it and it was a clean romance.

The book begins with Serena clinging to ledge of a building (1,200+ ft. up) in New York (which I think is the Empire State building but it's never clearly said so I'm not sure) and she hear the voice of her dead mother telling her to "let go and fly". Which she does. This is the way she ends up time-traveling to Egypt to the year 2361 B.C., which I found so strange and I'm sure how I feel about it. On one hand it makes it more understandable then how more people aren't time-traveling, if you have to be so sure that you will or you'll die. But on the other hand it was never clearly explained, hardly at all really, so when Serena is talking about finding any tall building later on in the book to jump from I was confused. Was it supposed to be just falling from a certain height that triggered the time-travel? Or was it her knowledge that it was possible and therefore made it happen? So confusing!

I very much enjoyed where the story was set, have always loved reading about ancient Egypt, but even though I've always had an interest in Egypt's history I haven't retained many of the names of rulers so I'm not sure how accurate the characters are...or if they're meant to be. If they represent real ones or if the authors made them up was never said, which is a little annoying. Not terribly annoying but it does bug me.

I do wish the story would have mentioned the time of year, such as every time the week or month changed, instead of not at all. It's not that big of a deal, just something that I always prefer books to have when the details in the story don't tell you.

The details of the story made me as though I was there, which is always nice. I enjoyed the use of Egyptian words, even though it was hard to follow sometimes as the words weren't always explained right away, it made me relate with how Serena must have felt. At least at first because she didn't recognize them either. However, it was hard to remember them and when Serena knew them in the story the English translation didn't appear as often so I either had to flip back and try to find one of the earlier uses or just ignore the word (which is what I usually did). I don't think this hurt my enjoyment of the story though, the only reason I mention it is so that if you choose to read the story maybe you'll write them down and save yourself the hassle of either searching or trying to remember what they meant. But the richness the use of them brought was worth the struggle, so I'm glad they were used.

Every chapter also starts with lines that I came to realize gave a short little story of their own. I think this is what Serena writes at the end, but it's never put together in one place so you's have to read the beginning of each chapter all at once (instead of reading the story in between) to get the message, at least I did. It was nice, but I felt it kind of took away from the main story itself so wish it wasn't where it was. Not sure where I would have put it in the story, but maybe when Serena's writing whatever she's writing at the end (since as I said this is what I think she's writing).

When Serena first meets the the cousins I didn't care for either of them! However, either one of them soon changed or I was able to see his true nature because I quickly loved him. Yes, he could still be very annoying, but his sweet side more than made up for it.

I would recommend reading The Scholar if you love historical romance and are looking for a book that's a very quick read and brings a smile to your face.

***I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. I was asked to give my honest opinion of the book - which I have done.***

2nd book in the series
Finished 11/16/13

Review: Paris and Roan have gotten married since the last book while they were up in Canada to visit Paris' family. Paris is getting sicker and sicker with his tiger strain virus. Matt, a kid from the last book who talks a mile a minute shows up at Roan's office wanting to hire him as something *fishy* has happened to a friend he made while in rehab. Roan is called away to deal with a *pack* of cougars in a barn that the cops can't deal with. During all this Roan gets a call from one of his old counselors/doctors from when he was a virus child. They have a new medical trial that they would like him to join - he will join as long as they take Paris as well. And so the story unfolds. With Paris getting sicker and sicker along the way and planning is funeral/wake and continuing to take care of Roan before he dies by enlisting all his friends to make sure that Roan doesn't disappear into himself or the lion once Paris is gone. Heart breaking to read.

I double-checked and the few reviews I read say that would consider it YA so hopefully they won't be like those, but thanks for the warning :) And thanks for mentioning the series in the first place, I never had heard of it. I do have her other vampire series, Vampire Academy, on my tbr (at least the first book) though I haven't read them. Now after reading the reviews for Bloodlines it sounds like this is a spin-off featuring the secondary characters from Vampire Academy. I do like to read vampire novels, every once in a while, and it's been a while since I've read one - think I'm going to read one soon :) Just not sure which one I'll read, lol! I hope to get Kiss of Revenge by Debbie Viguié soon so I can finish the trilogy, I loved the first two :) But out of the two series mentioned by Richelle Mead, I don't know! I'll probably end up reading them in the order they were published, so Vampire Academy first since the series are connected, as I hate to get any type of spoilers :)

The Hawk (Highland Guard, #2) by Monica McCarty
Book:
The Hawk by Monica McCarty (Book 2 of Highland Guard Series)
Finished 11/15
Rating & Review: ★★★3/4

I tried this one on audio to see if the series would improve from book 1...It didn't really get much better.
I will try book 3 before I give up on the series.

This book picked up right where book 1 left of. Robert the Bruce has handpicked highland chiefs who specialize in certain areas of warfare to make up an elite, yet secret army named the Highland Guard.

This story featured Eric MacSorley, "Hawk" is a master seafarer, who literally soars through the water. Elyne de Burgh is promised to the brother in law of King Edward as a way to bond her highland family to the English crown.

Ellie was swimming when she came upon a cave where the highland guard was training. When the men decided to kill her in order to keep their identities secret, Eric quickly took action and kidnapped her from the highland guards.

He led her to believe that he was a pirate wanted for looting English ships, and Ellie told him that she was a nursemaid to some English kids. Even though Hawk kept commenting that she was not like the women he preferred (she was too thin etc), he kept kissing her. And she figured out how to push his buttons and did so often. So began their love dance:D

It took awhile to get going, and I think the writing style isn't engaging for me. I liked this couple the same as I liked book 1--but I needed a little something else to love this story. I don't know, but I was a little disappointed.

Maybe if I could stop thinking about Braveheart, that would help me because I want that movie...but in this book.

Review: It was so nice to finally get to read Trey's book and see him get his HEA. The whole gang from Sinners is there. Brian and Myrna have a newest addition to the family in Malcolm Trey. Reagan wins a chance as the top 5 guitarist to try out for Exodus End Trey's brother Dare's band. Trey happens to be there for the *blind* try outs and gets pissed because he thinks they are pulling his leg and Brian is playing for them. Low and behold it is Reagan and she can hold her own against the sexy turn every sentence into sex Trey Mills. Trey after coming from seeing Brian and Myrna happy with there new son has sworn off men. Ends up trying on having a steady girlfriend with Reagan. They totally compliment each other but things get sticky when Trey finds out that she broke up with her (now) best friend when she walked in on him in the shower with another man (Trey is bi-sexual for those of you who haven't read this series at all). Oh and Reagan starts receiving threatening notes while on tour with Sinners. Totally sexy end to this series and interesting introduction to Dare's bands series which I will probably read next year.
