392 people were in the FAYZ. 196 survived. The people outside were scared, unaware of course, and, since they couldn't control the happenings of the FAYZ, they decided to take their chances by trying to nuke it. They were fully aware of what the circumstances might be,it could have killed the children. But, it turned out to be advantageous, since it stopped the Gaiaphage's plans of leaving the FAYZ. But, that is not the point of this discussion.
Some people outside said that destroy these children and, "let God sort them out" and various other things as well. Michael Grant uses a pretty good example here to point out that people in reality do, and have been doing, exactly the same thing: KILL IN THE NAME OF GOD. It's also pretty amusing the way he has handled religion throughout the GONE series.
Now, imagine if the majority of the population was inside the FAYZ(not just teens below 15), and there were still enough people outside to carry out a nuclear strike. So, write down your thoughts about what would be the consensus outside the FAYZ, regarding the strike?
I think they would carry it out, because humans wants to be in control. But, since they'd be the minority they'd be condemned by other countries possibly, since they were the minority. That's what happens in our society, doesn't it? The minority are always(almost) treated like an aberration. Also, if they did actually nuke them and the FAYZ population survived, they'd be hanged or decapitated or, sentenced to lifetime imprisonment on the grounds of murder, annihilation, etc. Obviously, there will be people who'd not support the strike, just like in the series.
I'd also like to add that there was not much wrong about the actions undertaken by the outside population, we all need to survive after all? On that ground their actions were justified.
So, what are your thoughts about this?
Also, the author has taken a dig at religion and the idiosyncrasies of human beings and their sanctimonious behavior. In the light of the above statement, the best character that suits it is Astrid. A funny character she was.
