Sandra | 25914 comments Alien Separation (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #11) by Gini Koch
Reader's Choice Shelf
Date: 16/10/15
Rating: ★★★★★

The Mastermind has been revealed but no one knows how to tell Chuckie who killed his wife. Proof will need to be found.

Kitty has been back from her multiverse trip for only 12 hrs when she and a large number of her pack, including Jef & baby Jamie are pulled to Beta 8 in the Alpha Centuri system. They don't know who has done this or why this has happened.

This is essentially a wonderful adventure in a different universe from our own, so most things like flying snakes and ferret people are to be taken on trust.

The biggest thing wrong with the unexpected trip is that most of the travellers are split up. All the earth people are trying to find each other while at the same time trying to find out what is going on, and how to help our friends in the AC solar system. Kitty, Christopher & Chuckie end up in Purple Land and meet some good friends and some hungry creatures which Kitty names Snakipedes.

It is obvious that a war is brewing between the other inhabitants of the AC solar system with the prize being Beta 8. Kitty has her purse with her thanks to Algar, who it appears had a lot to do with Beta 8, including the coloured lands, tunnels, caverns, mindreading creatures and spiral up to the All Seeing Eye on top of the mountain.

Algar is feeding Kitty information through her ipod tunes and the odd gun clip, machine gun and contained nuclear device through the portal in her purse. She also has a goodly amount of poofs & Bruno to back her up.

Once again Kitty saves both Earth, Beta 8 & the rest of the Alpha Centuri system from the sneaky Z'porrah.

Lots of fun and humour and you can tell Gini had lots of laughing out loud moments whilst writing this one.

Hellbent (Cheshire Red Reports, #2) by Cherie Priest

Raylene continued to have her sarcastic humor in this one. There was less Pepper and Domino. I'd say less Ian too, but he is central to the plot in this one, even if he didn't have much page-time. More Adrian though. He was definitely Raylene's competent sidekick which I liked to see. Good story and action. I like how Raylene, always the loner in the past, now has a habit of picking up "strays," both of the human and other variety.
This is the last book, I don't think this series sold enough. The villain that was introduced in Bloodshot is still at large and nothing happened on that front in this one. Maybe at some point in time this will get another installment for the finish. One thing that I did find out was the fate of Adrian's sister, Isabelle.

message 419: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments It's a shame it didn't get a third outing Rachel, at least to polish off the villain. Maybe she'll self publish in the future, I'll have to keep an eye out.

Alisa Week 14 Reader's Choice

The Man in the Long Black Coat (Dale Bruyer #1) by J.L. Aarne
4 stars
finished 10/18/15

This was super good. Don't let the cover with the guy who looks like Elvis keep you from reading this. Very good UF type series w/a beautiful love story on the side. Dale and James are monster hunters (think Sam & Dean Winchester type of guys). At the beginning of the story we find Dale (alone after James has died from cancer) drowning in alcohol and grief. One morning after a very realistic dream that James is alive, Dale finds the a giant hole in the ground where he had buried him. Shortly after girls from the area start showing up ritualistically murdered. Dale gets pulled into the investigation when his neighbor comes asking for help.

The investigation was fast paced and interesting and Dale has a group of friends who make a great group of side characters. There's an angel, a shifter, Coyote and a reaper. This was well written and entertaining. The paranormal part was good and the love story was really beautiful. I enjoyed this a lot and am going to immediately start the next in the series.

Werewolves of New York: Nathaniel by Faleena Hopkins
Werewolves of New York Nathaniel by Faleena Hopkins

Read: 10.17.15
Rating: 2.5
Review:

Lacerated by flashing blue and yellow club lights, Rose made her way through the crowd, yelling, "I need to get laid!!!"

Michelle is out celebrating with her friend Rose when she catches the eye of a handsome man. After taking a drunken Rose home, Michelle foolishly starts walking to her own apartment. She is attacked and almost raped but is saved by an unknown creature.

Nathaniel is a werewolf that works as an architect with his friends(and fellow werewolves) Eli, Darik and Dontae. He is also the handsome man from the club.

Nathaniel basically stalks Michelle until she agrees to go on a date with him.

The storyline is a little much to take. I find it hard to believe that Michelle would not freak out when she discovers Nathaniel true self on their first date. Everything seems rushed with no character building. The relationship moves far too fast to be believable.

A bit of a disappointment.

I do feel bad when I don't do a good review. I also don't want to mislead anyone into reading a just ok book when they could be reading a true 4 or 5 star story.

Alisa Wow...I didn't realize how few books I have with couples on them until I went searching for one. I would have thought it would be easy. *off to look some more*

message 440: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments That's why I was hanging onto The Danger of Destiny (Mystwalker, #4) by Leigh Evans cause I don't have a lot of books with couples, at least over 200 pgs. At least ones I'd be prepared to read for Bingo.

message 441: by Moondance (new)

Moondance (moondance120) | 2141 comments Me too, Alisa! I didn't realize how many I had with one person and an animal/shifter. I need to make a master list of Kindle books that are over 200 pages. I would find one that looked good and it had 166 pages or so.

message 442: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Rachel, I'm going to change my book. I just found out The Danger of Destiny (Mystwalker, #4) by Leigh Evans is the last book in the series, and I'm not ready to let it go yet.

I'll let you know what book I decide on, as soon as I know.

message 443: by Moondance (new)

Moondance (moondance120) | 2141 comments I finished my book yesterday only to discover that it does not fit the rules. Amazon listed it at 235 pages. The book actually ends on page 178. I am going through my bookcases to see what will work.

message 444: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I've got to buckle down and find something. Everything I'm finding is book one in a series and I don't really want to start a new one. *le sigh*

Feral Sins (The Phoenix Pack, #1) by Suzanne Wright
10/24 3*

Full disclosure: The synopsis of this book didn't appeal to me. At all. But I needed a book to borrow from the Prime Leading Library and I thought, many decent reviews. So, where start?
Not a fan of the world; if you are different or seen as less means being property and being used as a pawn with no choices. I didn't like Taryn and Trey's first (and several subsequent) sexual encounters. I recognize it was explained as making sure/proving a dominate was "worthy" of their mate's submission. It made me uneasy when Taryn said "no," but sex happened anyway. I didn't like that being submissive meant 100% domination. "..I own you." "Taking what is mine." "I'll mark you wherever I want." "And I'll fuck my little bitch whenever I want." Don't get me wrong, the sex scenes were hot, but I felt they were mainly about Trey asserting his dominance. Domination first, pleasure second. He would tell him he owned her body and could do whatever, whenever he wanted with it. (Say what?!). Granted, towards the end, their scenes together were more balanced. I just wish that balance had occurred sooner or been there from the start.
I'm surprised I kept reading and gave it 3 stars (for me a 3 is average; neither bad nor great). I did like the writing and found I wanted to know what happened. I adored Taryn and her snappy comments. I also liked her strength. Shockingly, I also somewhat liked Trey. He was so emotionally stunted, I had to see what happened.
Not sure if I will read more in this series. If they are like this one (with the dominance), nope. I would like a more equal sexual relationship (and if someone says no, it means no. No mixed messages about proving worthiness. I call bullshit on that).

message 446: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments The others aren't as bad dominance-wise as #1. And I can't remember any others having a 'say no' but do it anyway.

message 447: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Gone with the Wolf (Seattle Wolf Pack, #1) by Kristin Miller
Shelf: Coupledom
Date: 27/10/15
Rating: ★★★

Gone with the Wolf has Werewolf Alpha & CEO of Wilder Finance, Drake pitted against Bar Owner & Temp Secretary, Emelia.

They had some funny moments, Emi was mad about him ignoring her emails & phone calls about the Bar and decided to get a temp job at Wilder Financial to get some inside dirt on him.

However, Drake has a brother who wants to be Alpha and to do so needs to remove Emi, as she is his brother's mate (called luminary in this world).

As Drake was such a sweetheart with Emi, except for a few instances, he never came across as a competent Alpha. There was too much telling & not enough showing for me. He never even beat Silas, the brother, when they were fighting.

It did have all the feels and a very nice HEA, so I might well read further into the series.

Rising Darkness by Cynthia Cooke
Rising Darkness (Dark Enchantments #2) by Cynthia Cooke

Read: 10.26.15
Rating: 3 stars
Review:

On the night of the Equinox, a devil's moon pierced the treetops, casting silver light into the clearing.

A gypsy curse in 1761 dooms the McGovern family. The demon Asmos is called forth and each woman in the McGovern line will never be allowed to enjoy true love. The demon will kill the lover with the woman's hands.

Damien is a demon hunter and vampire that wants to help Emma McGovern fight the demon Asmos. Damien's brother Nickolai is aligned with the gypsies and wants the demon to come forth in Emma and cause destruction.

Emma does not know her family history. She was scarred as a child and has spent most of her life cloistered in Wolvesrain, her ancestral home.

Damien is strangely drawn to Emma and finds that he must do everything he can to save her and himself.

A decent storyline that weaves magic from present day and the 1700's. Of course Damien makes a few missteps that hinder his relationship with Emma. There were a few other characters that I assume pop up in future books. Or at least I hope so that I can be reacquainted with the Cadre.
