R12: Team #3 ~ Insomniacs Who Love to Read
Sandra wrote: "Bummer Alisa. I've preordered, so not long till I get it :)Cheryl, I've got the 1st 3 Rylee's. Gotta start, maybe for new author or new series hopefully."
I was at my favorite used bookstore a few weeks ago and spotted the whole series. A woman beat me to the shelf because I stopped to let a toddler go by. She pulled all of them off the shelf and almost ran to the register. I seriously considered chasing her! I've been reading them on my Kindle.
Oh no, you should of tripped her, and instead of helping her up, picked up the books. LOL.I've got em on kindle.

I considered it! ;-)
Shelf 6: DARK AND STORMYThe Better Part of Darkness by Kelly Gay
Read: 8.21.15
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review:
"You told a two-thousand-year-old oracle to prove it."
Charlie Madigan is a detective in Atlanta with the Integration Task Force. She is also a single mom to Emma. Charlie's partner, Hank, is a siren. people are dead or dying from a drug known as ash. It becomes personal when a family friend becomes a victim.
Charlie is a confusing character. She is kick ass at times and almost clueless at others. Her sister, Bryn, has an herb shop in Underground which since the Revelation caters primarily to the otherworldly. Charlie died 8 months before the beginning of this book and was brought back. This portion of the storyline is a basic good vs. evil plot with both the Elysians(gods) and Charbydons(demons) taking roles.
I adore Hank! I would like a gorgeous siren by my side! The trip to the Bath House is a hoot! Charlie is trying to come to terms about things that are happening within her that were not there before her death. The betrayal of her ex-husband, Will, still haunts her even though she can't stop loving him.
I like that Charlie puts her daughter first in everything she does. Her focus never lessens even as she is fighting the bad guys. There were a couple of times I put the book down and didn't think I would finish it but it kept drawing me back. I look forward to the next book to see where Charlie's life will lead.

What a nice conclusion. When I read the synopsis, I kinda thought completely new characters and didn't think any of the previous characters (necessarily) would make an appearance. We do see previous characters (yay!) and Lumina isn't the new character I first thought she was (I should have picked up who she was sooner, but it's been a year since I read the previous book!). This takes place 24 (let's just say 25 years since it opens on Dec 25th 2037) after the events of the previous book.
The diary entries at the beginning give a good sense of the changes in the world. This one was more dystopian with the romance more in the backseat when compared to the previous 5 books in the series. It works. I overall liked the pacing; however, I felt the events leading up to the end were a bit rushed. The final showdown with the big bad was a blink and you miss it. There should have been more there.
Cheryl-I really liked that series and am patiently waiting for book 5 (has a cover, but no release date).

In other words...."Alisa, catch your dang self up!!" :)
I've finished a couple of other books for a challenge and can't decide if I should start something today or wait for shelf call. What a problem to have!
I always read something short that wouldn't qualify for Bingo when it gets too close to shelf time, or else something I just have to read. LOL.
Urban Fantasy covers over half of my bookshelves! I'm thinking Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews because I am WAY behind and need to catch up with everyone that just read the latest.
Sandra wrote: "Great choice Cheryl!!!I'm going with
which I need to read for a challenge :)"Please tell me it is a terrible series and I don't need to add it to my TBR!
Well, the first book
is one of my favs, but some of the others are good or ok only. So a bit of a mixed bag, and some of the novellas are fantastic as well.

Shelf 5/Demons

Can I just say how sad I am that this series has come to an end? (at least the main plot line). This was an angsty ride and I loved Revenant. I thought Blaspheme was a pretty good heroine. Lot's of fast paced adventure and some good sexy times. Ione is the master of taking bad boy/unlikable characters and making you love them in the end. I really enjoyed this one.

Oh I loved this one. This so far is my favorite in the series. Poor Malkom. What a horrible, horrible past he had. My heart just broke for him. I really liked Carro also. This story was just a perfect blend of emotion, action/adventure, romance and sexy times. Plus I laughed out loud numerous times.
Moondance wrote: "How is your daughter doing? Has she started back to school?"We've had some really up and down days. I sent her back to school last week although she really didn't feel up to going. I felt it would improve her mental status. So far it seems to be doing her a world of good. Thanks for asking about her. :)
Sandra wrote: "Well, the first book

I got stuck at the third book in that series but I think that Dragon Bound is a great, great example of top of the line pnr.
Alisa, have you read the shortie novellas centred on Dragos? You don't need to read the other books, they are fabulous :)
Shelf 7/UFI'm going to read
because I added that book to my reading shelf in May (yes May), read one chapter and got distracted (I'm like a big crow/magpie with my ease of getting distracted)and it's still sitting there. Time to get this done.
Sandra wrote: "Alisa, have you read the shortie novellas centred on Dragos? You don't need to read the other books, they are fabulous :)"Just this one
I'll have to get the others cuz really I love him. Doesn't matter how many pnr books I read Dragos always stays in my top 5 heros.
CONGRATULATIONS, Insomniacs! You now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'demons' and 'dark & stormy'.
[Your updated BINGO card can be viewed on page 1]
Good Job!! :D
Thank you for the stamps, Steph. They make the card I have on my desk look so pretty when I color in the squares. I don't have every team's card up this round. Yet...
LOLI'm thinking of changing my book. Just not in the mood for Midnight's Kiss.
Rachel, I'll let you know what I'm reading as soon as I settle on something.
Sandra wrote: "How dare RL interfere with reading!!"I know!! But is does pay for books and yarn and cat food so I guess I have to go. Those are the important things! I guess the mortgage and car are as well.

I hate it when a really good series decides to say goodbye.
But at least this one went out strong. Our heroine Kitty Norville, werewolf, grew over the 14 books into a capable strong Regina Luporum. A radio talkshow host - The Midnight Hour - where she gave a voice to the supernatural and got to stir up trouble on a regular basis.
As this was the final book, all Kitty's allies made an appearance and in fact turned into her army against Roman the Master Vampire, the Dux Bellorum, General of the bad guys. Roman had vamps & demons on his side, not to mention dark magic which included volcanic eruptions. But who is Caesar?
On the good side we had Ben & Cormac/Amelia, of course, and Detective Jessi Hardin, Tina from the Paranormal P.I. show, Sun, Odysseus Grant from Vegas, Rick & his vampire ninjas and mysterious men in black. What was missing was the pack. They have been spirited away so they couldn't be used against her, but no one knows who did the spiriting.
A very good final showdown and a great personal ending for Kitty & Ben. Great to see an author that gives more than half a page to wrap up a story. Loved it.

I have been holding off reading this because I don't want it to end!
That is usually my problem as well. I'm sure you'll like it when you get to read it. Don't leave it too long.

I've been putting this book off since I DNF'd another book by this author (My Unfair Lady). So, thanks to Bookshelf Bingo to get it off my list.
This has an interesting alternate history premise. Well, it would be assuming the fae, dragons, and magic were real. So imagine England taken over by the fae. Multiple wars are fought to see who has the privilege of "capturing" the King. Those that fight and die are human and half-breeds. Killing and harming are all fun and games. The fae are evil, evil, evil. (Did I mention how evil they were?) So, all the elements were there for an awesome kick-ass story.
But......not really. At least for me. Cassandra. She's been groomed to be the Fire King's bride and is also trained as an assassin. Cool. But, wait for it....her talent is dancing or death dance. Um...okay...that's different.
Dominic. I hated him. I really don't care that much for arranged marriage romances. What I really didn't like was they fell into bed right away (really, what did I expect it was set in the 1700s- bad me!). What made it so totally unbelievable was she fall IN LOVE right away. To react in this way when, having sex was the most interaction they've had, was ridiculous. Now, they had previous, brief visits where Dominic "...treated her with a disinterest bordering on contempt." She had this reaction with a kiss- "Cass's heart flipped over." Oh hell no. And that's not all. She has to continually see him touch and kiss his mistress. Now I get this was an act, but really. No.
The only good part of the book was dear old dad (Mor'ded) got what was coming to him.
Multiple references to God, Lord, pray/prayer. (At least 48)
Just checked and I haven't got that one. *phew* The cover looks familiar though. Bless you *pun intended* for finishing this drivel.
