Sandra | 25914 comments JAK is my go-to comfort read, I know exactly what to expect and she never disappoints - so, always a quick read for me :)

I'm really looking forward to the #2 Call of Crows book, Cheryl. It's due in March, The Undoing (Call of Crows, #2) by Shelly Laurenston - don't click on it till you've finished Unleashing, as there are spoilers in the blurb, but the cover is pretty.

message 102: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I love that cover on the Crows one. Is it a different type of story that this author's other work?

message 103: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Alisa, SL wrote a story called Hunting Season (The Gathering #1) by Shelly Laurenston back in 2009 - these new books are based on the same world but in a different city, hence new charatcers.

Norse mythology - Vikings that turn into ravens, doing their gods will (good guys) and the crows, who are warrior women who have been killed and brought back to life to serve their god (also good gals). Both groups love to party. I was so happy that she has continued writing these stories, though I love Hunting Ground better, probably cause I've had years to re-read it.

Sandra | 25914 comments Siren's Call (Rainshadow, #4; Harmony, #12) by Jayne Castle
Happy Birthday Shelf
Date: 30/7/15
Rating: ★★★★

Ella Morgan is a Dream Analyst from a prestigious musical family, she's also a Siren, but don't tell anyone. On the World of Harmony, many things are the same, and a whole lot are very different.

Ella is surprised by a desperate Dust Bunny, and goes down into the catacombs to offer assistance. There she frees 6 more dust bunnies from alien tech experimentation and in the process is found by Rafe Coppersmith who discovers her secret, and asks her out for coffee.

Of course, something bad happens to Rafe and he doesn't show. Three months later he turns up and wants to hire Ella to stop the singing dinosaurs on Rainshadow Island.

There are various kidnapping attempts, a murder, protestors, a mysterious criminal organisation and traitors, and a very determined Dust Bunny with a veil, named Lorelei.

All-in-all, a very good addition to both the Harmony & Rainshadow series.

Spellcasting in Silk (A Witchcraft Mystery #7) by Juliet Blackwell
4* Aug 2nd

One of the things I adore about this series is Lily's growth. She started out as unsure, not trusting others, and a bit of a recluse. She's gradually opened up, she has friends (who love her just as she is), she's in a relationship. This book further explores her relationship with Sailor, she has to deal with jealousy and trust. She's stronger for it. I think this book focuses more on Lily's personal life than past books. The mystery is still there (as the "unofficial witchy consultant of the SFPD"), but I felt it was more in the background.

My other disappointment with the book is the ending is abrupt. This particular series has a yearly wait between books. I can take a strong guess where this series might be going.

The pig (he is actually a hobgoblin, the pig is his disguise when around non-magical people) is Oscar. He is Lily's familiar, so yes he does play a significant part (in all the books).

The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston
The Unleashing (Call of Crows, #1) by Shelly Laurenston
Read 7.31.15
Rating: ****
Review:

She didn't know what woke her up.

Kera Watson is a former Marine working in a coffee shop when she is killed. She wakes up as a Crow thanks to Ludvig "Vig" Rundstom's intervention. Vig calls upon Skuld to save Kera and she is reborn into the Crow Clan. Vig is a member of the Raven Clan and has a sister who is a Valkyrie. Crows are the harbinger of death and fly in strike teams on killing missions. Kera's rescued pit bull, Brodie, also transitions into the Crow Clan.

This book is filled with Norse mythology. The Ravens and Crows are trying to prevent Ragnarok. Someone is trying to summon the Goddess Gullveig which will start the beginning of the end.

I enjoyed the mythology. My knowledge is more Celtic based so it made me think and also research some of the Norse gods and goddesses. I love the dog rescue aspect of the story! My OCD appreciated Kera's need to organize the Crows. Love the clipboard! Kera and Vig's relationship is interesting to watch develop. I look forward to more. The humor is great and introducing famous people as Crows is genius.

I am looking forward to the next book.

Alisa Shelf Two/A Bloody Mess
Blood Games (Chicagoland Vampires, #10) by Chloe Neill
Date finished: Aug 04, 2015
Rating: 2 stars

Caution: hateful, ranty review ahead:

If you've read any of the prior books you've already read this one. They're having problems with the GH (*yawn*), Ethan's panties are all in a bunch while he's protecting the house (*yawn*), Ethan has a secret he's keeping from Merit and he's full of angst (*yawn*), Merit's unsure of their relationship and so,so worried about Ethan (*yawn*), there's some powerful vampire woman from Ethan's past that he won't talk about (*yawn*). There was a side story about a magic serial killer that was pretty good but it only had small parts in the book.

Nothing we haven't seen before in this series....ad nauseum. It's time that this series and I part ways. The last few books were better imo. Ethan got over himself for about 5 minutes and I like the shifters. Unfortunately this was back to the same teenage angst of the first few books that made me want to stake Ethan myself.

On a staking Ethan note.....I know I'm the odd man out but I don't understand why so many women like his character. This dropping to your knees repeatedly a few time each book pretending you're going to ask someone to marry you and then basically saying "psych" is not funny, sweet, cute, charming or whatever imo. It makes you a fricking douchemonkey.

So...yeah...not even my love of the shifters and Catcher can salvage this for me. Offical breakup between Alisa and Ethan/Merit.

#sorrynotsorry

Alisa My daughter is doing better. Thanks so much for asking about her. We had a horrible month last month to be honest. She's not having much pain now and the xrays we did last week so the bones are starting to regrow to the place they should be at this time in the healing process. She's in casts from mid-thigh down which is miserable for a 7 year old. (miserable for mommy too to be honest). She had a major surgery though so she's doing really well considering. She starts school at the end of next week and she has to go back in a wheelchair which she is super upset about but.......you know, mean mommy is making her go anyways. lol

Glad she is doing better! Tell her everyone will be excited about the wheelchair and she may make some new friends. Orthopaedic surgeries take FOREVER to heal. Give her time.

BTW, love your review. There are a number of series that I need to break up with. Some that others think are wonderful and I just can't make myself love them.

Her's was pretty intensive too. Both hips and one ankle and shin. It amazes me how well she's done with the pain. I'd probably be eating pain killers like candy. She's been good with a little OTC ibuprophen here and there.

I hate breaking up with series. I stick around way too long. Long after the love has gone. (Although in this case I never loved this series. Why did I keep reading? I have no idea) SMH at myself

May I ask if it was post trauma or congenital? Not that it matters cause it hurts either way. It always amazes me how resilient kids are. I can go up on the floor after a toddler had surgery in the morning and find them in the playroom. With adults, I find them in their bed moaning and groaning.

Alisa @Moondance.....she was born with Cerebral Palsy and has a milder form. She walks with leg braces and a walker and we do botox injections in her legs a few times a year. Due to that though her hips have never properly aligned and they turn in so badly she trips over her own feet when she walks without twister cables. Also if she lays on her stomach she can literally point her feet to opposite walls. So....ortho wanted to re-do her hips and one of her shins. They cut and moved the hips to where they should be and put pins and plates in. Then they cut the bone above the ankle and rotated her shin and then put pins and plates in there. (see why I would be eating pain pills like candy?) She's in a cast from mid thigh down to her toes for the next 8 weeks. So far the initial xrays showed it's healing as expected so if all goes right she will get them off them and we will start back to physical therapy. Hopefully she will not need the botox and the twister cables anymore and maybe we'll be able to some day get her out of the leg braces and she'll be able to use crutches instead of a walker. She's only 7 so we have lot's of time to keep working on things. She's super tough and very motivated so I'm optimistic.

That is a lot of surgery for a little girl!My patients have congenital anomalies of the face. Most surgeries of the head and neck are not as painful as those to long bones. I'm very proud of her to not be taking pain meds! Sending healing thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery and an excellent outcome.

The bookstore was not helpful either. That's why I usually go to a small independent store. It is still rather pricey on Kindle. I may have to break down and get the hardcover. (which I realize is pricey too but at least I can hold it in my hand and admire it) I was considering it for Cover Love too.

Sandra | 25914 comments Yep, I thought about getting the kindle for instant gratification but at over AU$16 I couldn't justify it when I'd already ordered the pb which I think was AU$11.

Alisa Shelf Three/Happy Birthday

Ink and Shadows (Ink and Shadows, #1) by Rhys Ford
date finished: Aug 07, 2015
rating: 3.5 stars

This book was a mixed bag for me. Things I really liked and others I didn't. I read this author's romantic suspense and like it a lot. This was only her second UF and you could tell. The world building was clunky. The idea is good but the execution is not smooth. It focuses on a MC Kismet who is human but can see through the Veil from our world to the supernatural world. He thinks he's going crazy so he uses heroin to keep the visions at bay. Two of the four horsemen come across him in a fight with a wraith and when they realize he can see them and he's not insane they end up trying to help him from all the bad guys that want to get him (which is where the story got a convulted). I liked all of the MC's though and there's a side romance going on between War and Death that I enjoyed. I was confused for much of the first 40%. It took me way too long to read this book. I will give the second one a chance before I make a decision though. Most UF gets a two book chance from me.

Moondance (moondance120) | 2141 comments Shelf 4: SERIES CATCH UP

Immune by Shannon Mayer
Immune (Rylee Adamson, #2) by Shannon Mayer

Read: 8.6.15
Rating: 4 stars
Review:

"Wait, what did you say?"

The second book in the Rylee Adamson series begins with a call for help from Dox, the bar owning ogre. Rylee also has a new assignment to locate a missing child. Her relationship with best friend, Milly is fragile as Rylee thinks she is sleeping with Liam. The remnants of the fight with a demon in the previous book has affected Rylee more than she knows. Liam is trying to separate his feelings for Rylee and his need to keep her safe. Together they discover that even an Immune can be compromised.

Alex has a larger role in this installment and I really enjoyed him. It was interesting to see how even a submissive was willing to fight for Rylee's affections. Eve, the Harpie, has a bigger storyline as well. Her loyalty and need for Rylee's approval is touching.

I appreciate the story building. I am really happy to see Liam and Rylee's relationship progress. I learned more about Trolls than wanted to know. The ending was abrupt and now I must read the next book to see what happens.

Alex is one of my top 3 dog-like characters of all time!

I'll Be Slaying You (Night Watch, #2) by Cynthia Eden 4* Aug 9th

That was fun. I really liked Dee. She was a great kick-ass character. Chase was another good character, an Alpha, but not too much of one. He saves Dee, but she also does some saving too. One point I liked was, while both strong on their own, together they are unstoppable. I liked the twist. Nice. Very nice.
Jude and Erin make appearances as do Zane, Pak, and Catalina.
