Marchioness of Magenta | 110 comments October Halloween Read-a-Thon

Event 1: Read Like A Banshee:

How to Read Like a Banshee

Step #1: Set a personal goal and let us know about it - this one is just for fun. It wouldn't be a read-a-thon without some goal, right?

Step #2: Find your team's read-a-thon goal - This is as simple as the sum of the book goals from each participant in the read-a-thon.

Step #3: Keep us posted from your process on the provided thread- this one is very important.

Step #4: Read. Read. Read.
Grab your books. Tell the world to stop during 2 weeks. Tell the kids you will be busy reading. Grab your favorite snacks. Find your favorite reading nook and read like a Banshee.

◈ How to keep track
We will provide a thread for this. After you finish the reading for the day. Or you are changing books. Or you need a break. Whatever. Just go to the thread and say which book you are reading and the amount of pages you read from said book.

◈ How to find the winner:
First sum the pages read by your team (A). Grab your team's Tower Team Goal (B)
A/B = read-a-thon ratio.

Example: Team Moonstone only has 3 members participating on the read-a-thon.
book goals are:
Member book goal
Chris 100
Rebecca 150
Vi 213

Total book goal:100+150+213 = 463

Now add the number of pages read during the RaT
Member pages read
Chris 1000
Rebecca 2000
Vi 3000

Total of pages read = 1000+2000+3000 = 6000

Moonstone Points for the Reading Like a Banshee option:
(6000/463)*100 = 1295,896

The event winner will be the team with a bigger read-a-thon ratio.

Jess (jesscatt) | 40 comments Goal: I'd be happy getting 1500 pages read, I'm loathe to commit to a book goal since I've still got two cutthroat-sized books in the works :s

Read:
The Intruders by E.E. Richardson My copy says 278 pages, all of which were read during the challenge. Works for Event 2's theme 8: supernatural creatures.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman 185 pages, all read during the challenge. Works for theme 2: masters of horror and fantastic.

It turns out my flu came in handy because reading is about the only thing I've felt up to doing since this challenge started! :P

Peeps (Peeps, #1) by Scott Westerfeld 304 pages, works for themes 8 & 10.

The Last Days (Peeps, #2) by Scott Westerfeld 286 pages, works for themes 8 & 10.

The Infernal by Kim Wilkins 478 pages, works for themes 8 (does a scary wizard guy count?) and 10.

Books I haven't finished yet but have read some pages from during the challenge:
A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3) by George R.R. Martin = 42 pages
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas = 545 pages

Total pages read during the challenge : 1918/1500.

Marchioness of Magenta | 110 comments That's ok, Marie! I'm using all to update.

Also, I'm doing an update tomorrow morning for both the events. So could you please update your posts?

Remember, you don't have to finish a book during the RaT to count the pages. Any pages you read during the RaT counts.

Jess, you can count your Big Book pages that you read during the RaT and you need not even finish the books!

Allison, The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King has a read date of Oct 2. For the October Halloween Hunt, the book has to be read between Oct 4 - Oct 19. If you've read before, then could you please remove the book from your post?

Thanks!!

Marchioness of Magenta | 110 comments Final & Bonus Task:

The mods have posted the Final Task (and an unexpected Bonus Task) each for 5 BAP for a grand total of 10 BAP (BAP is Book Advantage Points. One point is equal to One book. It boosts our total) Here's the info:

Final Task

Using the titles (or covers) of the books read in the completed tasks write your own story. (Halloween themed or not - your choice)

Rules:
1) Minimum 6 books
2) You can use any number of tasks you want, but, you have to use ALL titles/covers in that task.
3) You must post the tasks chosen and your story on the Event #2: Clues & Final Task thread.

Example: (Using 10 books from 3 tasks)

Task 2: Special Abilities
Tangled Threads
The Kingdom

Task 3: Trick-or-treat (Costume)
E - Eve
L - Lover Awakened
F - Frost Burned

Task 5:Creatures
Carnival of Souls
Warm Bodies
Lover Eternal
The Wicked Kiss
Shadowfever

Final Task:
Eve, a spooky voice said, your Lover Awakened from a Frost Burned Shadowfever in The Kingdom. For him you will face a wall of Warm Bodies, unravel Tangled Threads and enter the Carnival of Souls. For he's your Lover Eternal and only with him will you share The Wicked Kiss.

For the Bonus Task, we need to write a story using ALL the 15 titles we submitted for the Halloween Book Hunt.

Any creative people to come up with two stories??

I read "Magic Bleeds" not "Magic Bites" :)

Jennifer H Red Dragon (Hannibal Lecter, #1) by Thomas Harris -348 pages (10/18/13)

message 23: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Would this work for one of the stories...

"Peeps" let me tell you a story...
The "Infamous" "Coraline" entered "The House of Hades" "Between the Realms" of "The Infernal" "Inferno". At "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" "Coraline" was "Branded" with "Cold Magic". "After the Fall" of "The Last Unicorn" the "Magic Bleeds" into "A Chalice of Wind".

Marchioness of Magenta | 110 comments Ugh! Thanks for the catch, Jennifer! I don't know what I was thinking.

The story sounds great! I think it's the shortest one yet. And you fit all 15 books! I'm very impressed :)

Now we need a story with six books.

Marchioness of Magenta | 110 comments ATTENTION!

The Read-A-Thon ends in a little over 12 hours! I have a little over 2 days to report our final tally. If everyone could update their totals in 24 hours, I'd be very grateful as I need to verify before posting.

THANK YOU!!

message 26: by Elle (new)

Elle (mllepapillon) | 10 comments Unless I am miscounting there are only 14 books as Coraline was repeated twice. .

message 27: by Elle (new)

Elle (mllepapillon) | 10 comments On a night of Cold Magic, Coraline pondered over The Mysterious Affair at Styles. After The Fall of the Chalice of the Winds, Peeps (the candy that is) began to come out of its depths along with the scent of processessed sugary goodness. Was there Between the Realms a connection between Styles and the Peeps factory, or was this merely an anomaly?

message 28: by Elle (new)

Elle (mllepapillon) | 10 comments A rather silly story, made while half asleep.

Marchioness of Magenta | 110 comments Elle, Caroline was read by both Allison and Jess which is why it's there twice.

Elle & Jennifer, thanks for helping out with the stories. I've submitted them with a little modification.

Great Job, Magenta Mix-Up!!

Marchioness of Magenta | 110 comments The Read-A-Thon has officially ended. Please update your posts with your pages read. I'll verify before posting so that I don't make goofs like I did above.

Thanks for a fun RaT everybody! I hope everybody enjoyed it.

message 31: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 40 comments Updated my post with the final pages read.

Good stories, Jennifer and Elle!
