Sarah | 18549 comments Oooh Interesting challenge! I think I'm going to read Life of Pi as it has been about 8 years since I read it last. I had planned to read it again for L in my alphabet but then I read something else instead. The perfect time for me to read it!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Quick question Janice. For the cover, can we count birds, fish, insects etc, as animals or does it specifically have to be a mammal?

message 5: by Esther (new)

Esther (estame) I think I am going to go with Wuthering Heights - I've not read it since school and I'd like to read it again through older eyes.

As long as it is a living organism and isn't a plant, it falls under the definition of animal, according to Merriam-Webster). There are more animals on earth than mammals. LOL!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments What do you mean by 'proper name in the title'? Something like a first name or last name?

I'm not sure yet whether I'll participate in this one. I never reread books, and I have so many books that I still want to read that I prefer new ones over ones that I read before. On the other hand, I do have some books on my real-life bookshelves that I read many many years ago and do not remember at all, so they are basically new books ;) And I just love the challenges here!

edit 5 minutes later: Oh! I could read The Color Purple!! I actually have that one on my TBR even though I have read it before. Yay! Count me in for this challenge then :D

How can I find out if a book was banned at some point? I only heard about banned books two days ago. Is there a specific list or something you use in this group, or can I just google it?

Hehehe... I like how you've talked yourself into this challenge by saying that the books on your bookshelf are basically new because you've forgotten them completely.

A proper name could be a first name or last name of a person as in Elmer Gantry or Still Alice. It could be the proper name of a place - A Town Like Alice or Mexico. Where it may get tricky is a proper name of a mythical person or place as in Nyx which is what I am currently reading. I didn't know when I started reading it what the significance of the title was. It turned out to be the name of the main character. If it's not obvious, then you will need to explain to me why it's a proper name.

Thanks Janice. Lol, I know that there are more animals on Earth than mammals but I just wanted to make sure I had understood everything correctly.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Janice!

And how about the banned books? (I edited my message later with that question, but probably while you were already answering my first one!)

Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite books! I was toying with the idea of reading it again for this challenge but I have re-read it so many times that I decided to go with something else. At the moment I am torn between Dark Matter and The Winter Ghosts.

Peggy, if you go into the Book Discussions board you will see a thread started by Kat called Banned Books. There are links in the first post that will tell you about banned books and list titles for you :)

A few months back we did a group read of banned books - check out the thread - there are books there that people nominated plus a few links to lists of banned books.

There are a number of ways that you can determine if a book has been banned or not. GR's has a couple of listopia's - http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/13...

Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...

You could be surprised and find that you liked it better the second time around. I recently re-read Dark Places. The first time around, I gave it 4 stars. The second - 5 stars!

Ohh, feindish. I've got a few books I last read at school - was put off by the teacher and have never tried again. Maybe now's the time to dip the toe back in the water...

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments That psychic crystal ball of yours!!!

I just made the statement elsewhere that I need to re-read The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game. Both are referenced in The Prisoner of Heaven, which I just finished.

Hmm. I actually have a shelf of 20 books, "Bring Em Back Alive", that I better consult before I make up my mind.☺

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I've looked at several books that might bring more points, but I've decided to go with Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I read that book in high school, and I'm certain I'll appreciate it far more today.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I think I may re-read King's Lisey's Story! It won a Bram Stoker award in 2006 and I can hardly remember what it was about. Should earn some decent points on this one, I think.

message 26: by Anna (new)

Anna Kļaviņa (annamatsuyama) | 1355 comments I'm going to re-read Dahl's short stories :)

message 27: by Thing Two (new)

Thing Two (thingtwo) I'm presenting The Strange Career of Jim Crow at my book club here in November, so that will be my re-read.

message 28: by Joe (new)

Joe | 93 comments I will be re-reading a book I read in elementary school - The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. I remember loving this book, but I can't remember a single thing about it!

message 29: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments Fun challenge Janice. I love rereads and find that I can have a completely different reaction to a book based on when I read it. Looks like I have a date to read To Kill a Mockingbird. I have been meaning to read this book through adult eyes-

message 30: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I set up the challenge. Go to the group's main page to enter your goals.

message 31: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I've also set up the reporting thread. Please keep any discussions in this thread. You might want to mention the book you finished in this thread so that people can comment. But don't forget to report your score in the other thread.

Oh, the cover on this book is SO familiar! I cannot remember if I ever read it or not though. The story line does not seem familiar, but the cover calls to me.

Cherie, I remember it as one I was totally engrossed in. Hoping it ends up that way rereading it. :)

message 39: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started reading The Color Purple. I forgot about the use of AAVE and it takes me a bit longer to read than regular English books.

Yes, I started re-reading Tom Sawyer some time ago and have run into this. I stopped reading and never got back to it. My grandson had been complaining about having to read the story about white washing the fence. He had to do a report and we were talking about why he didn't like reading it. He said it was "too hard to read". Not hard - just slow. :)

message 41: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm not sure I'm going to be able to take part in this challenge after all. I have so many books to read that I haven't read yet and some are chunksters.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I have someone in my book who has her garden filled with elephant statues and her curtains have elephants on them as well. And I have someone telling about being stampeded by elephants. Does any of that count, or do only real elephants that make an appearance get points?

Only real elephants that make an appearance count. They must be flesh and bone. :)

message 45: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda71) I have wanted to reread the Cynthia Harrods-Eagle historical fiction series. So, the second book, The Dark Rose (The Morland Dynasty, #2) by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles The Dark Rose will be my challenge for October

I have changed my mind and decided to read Kim by Rudyard Kipling.

message 47: by Ann (new)

Ann (disciple45) I've decided on God Is an Englishman (Swann Saga, #1) by R.F. Delderfield
which I first read back when I was in High School. I remember I loved it - but it is a small doorstop in size! Oh, well!

message 48: by Janice, Moderator (new)
