up to chapter 16 (view spoiler)[this is a reread for me, but tbh I don't remember much. I forgot how much I love Nikolai... he's probably my favorite character from these books ngl.

I'd totally forgotten Alina's visions of the Darkling and I can't remember what their significance is and it's kinda bugging me lol.

Mal's jealously of Nikolai I find really annoying, though I'm not an overall fan of Mal himself.

I am enjoying seeing how Alina handles and struggles with coming into power.

No need to apologize, you're totally not behind, I'm just listening to the audiobooks super fast, hardcore binging them to get to them all before the show comes out and I won't have as much time to read them closer to the show release date.

The ending was wild... like thinking Alina was going to surrender herself to the Darkling, then her using his power to create the shadow monsters (i have no idea how to spell what they are called (nichitvoya or something? that's totally wrong) i've been listening to the audiobook lol). What a power move!

Nikolai's older brother definitely pissed me off, as he did to probably everyone, but hmmmmmmmmmmmmm he just had to go and do that.

Oooh, that's an interesting thought. I personally never questioned it this way. But now that you mention it, i think yeah, it may be possible that something bigger is going on with him.

This is my first time as well. I’ve read shadow and bone and six of crows by this author. Shadow and bone wasn’t my favourite book but I quite liked the six of crows books so I’m expecting this series to improve.

Finished chapter 5
(view spoiler)[ a lot is happening in a short space of time. So far, they’ve been captured them freed then kind of captured and found and killed another powerful creature. I wonder what they’re gonna do with the rest of the book. I’m guessing they will find the third creature and then Alina will use all the amplifiers. That shouldn’t take long based off the current pace though. (hide spoiler)]

I’m enjoying this more than the last one but it seems impossible that I’m not even half way through. The story feels like it’s building for a big ending. I hope it manages to keep the momentum going.

Yes I think the book is at a fast paste like you said with the momentum and that's probably why we are enjoying it more. Just like the last book is starts of with some big events. Especially after finishing book 1 this momentum really keeps you going, though the problem is that it's going quite fast and a lot is happening which makes you think you're getting far into the book but your not even halfway!

Thoughts on what might happen next and spoilers:

(view spoiler)[I think Alina will get the third amplifier and try to build an army out of the first and second army though the second army will be quite difficult to get. Then I think she and her army will go after the Darkling. I also really like the thought of a golden kefta lol and I think Alina should speak about what she saw on the ship. I liked the conversation between Mal and Alina towards the end too, conversations like this are quite happy and I really want Alina and Mal to be happy. If there's a good ending at the end of book 3 then my life might as well be completed. (hide spoiler)]

The way he speaks makes me like him like Alina said though that one conversation between Alina and Nikolai kinda shakes my trust for Nikolai. He did have the words of the Darkling, the manipulative words and good looks and stuff, also we know he can't be too trustworthy because of his past
