I nominate Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven. Written in 2003 it is like previous group reads Devil in the White City and The Onion Field. Plus if you ever get to attend the great musical "Book of Mormon ", this book will allow you to get the inside jokes. Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
Think Slaton's Smith's new book, Kill on Command, would be a good read for this group. A very likable, real life guy gets caught up in a web of an off-the books CIA plot with a life-changing outcome. Available as an e-book from Amazon. Slaton SmithKill on Command

It does sound interesting, but might be more appropriate to wait until it's been out a bit longer and available in more formats to make it accessible to the max number of our members. Is that ok?
Ruth Rendell, Thirteen Steps Down and an earlier book of hers, Talking to Strange Men. Rendell does not disappoint.
I would like to nominate a book from several years back: My Dark Places by James Ellroy which is available both as a paperback and as an ebook.Ellroy writes about the unsolved murder of his mother in Southern California in 1958 and conflates that with his fascination with the Black Dahlia murder in 1940s Los Angeles. It's a daring, original highwire act, part confession and part murder mystery (or two!), written well before Ellroy's recent descent into tin-eared self-parody.
And I would love to have the chance to read it again and discuss it with others.

I'd love an impetus to get me to finish the book.
Here's my nomination and I'm only 12% into the book. Kim, this better have a good ending. So far I'm hooked and I'm sure you readers will be, too. Check it out!!
The book is A Beautiful Heist by Kim Foster.
I nominate "The Pawn" by Steven James. It is the first in a series and since I read it, I have read the second and third and am on the fourth. The characters have depth, the story line in each book is gripping, and there are many themes to discuss

Thom wrote: "Ruth Rendell, Thirteen Steps Down and an earlier book of hers, Talking to Strange Men. Rendell does not disappoint."Can you possibly just nominate one, Thom? Are they part of a series? I've never read any Rendell.

You really only have to nominate it once, Jim. :0)
Night Sins / Guilty as SinI really liked the detectives, setting and storyline in the "9th Girl" so I'm thinking about reading another Tami Hoag's novel. Or, two in one book, if that is okay.
I checked, she was not nominated in the past year and the book is available in three different formats. 25 Amazon reviewers gave it five starts. Three people gave it one star. I think it could be in interesting read.
Cefa wrote: "Ema - I read those years ago and enjoyed them.Strangely enough it is her earlier work that I devoured.
Have you read
A Thin Dark Line"
No,I've just discovered her, but thanks for the suggestion.
Hi all, I'm a newbie in this group and I look forward to seeing what book will be the winner. As for my nomination, here it is: Hell to Pay by George Pelecanos.Cheers. Hell to Pay

Hi Alex. Do you need to read the 1st in the series or can this be read as a standalone?
I nominateReviver: A Novel This book has been out for 3 months now I'm sure would be eligible for any reader to get a copy either buy it or loan from a library. Books by debut authors should have an equal chance of becoming a book read of the month. I plan on reading it in November.
Paul 'Pezski' wrote: "I'll nominate The Sacred Art of Stealing by Christopher Brookmyre."Paul - Do you need to read the first in the series or can this one be read on its own?
I nominate
First Night of SummerBy Landon Parham Gripping, chilling, and very emotional for a thriller. Disturbing yet relevant. It depicts one family's nightmare and how they must mend the pieces. It made it very different from all the other suspense books I have seen.
I nominate The Dark Before Dawn by Laurie Stevens(Goodreads Author) Gabriel McRay #1While Gabriel is trying to solve murders by a serial killer who has a personal interest in Gabriel, leaving him messages with each kill, he is also coping with spells of headaches and anger. He is in the care of a psychologist, and together they are unraveling memories of Gabriel's past. It's a great Psychological Crime novel, and the second one has just been released.
Marni, you might want to check the srvhives. I think we might have read this book in the last year or so.

Jan is right, Marni. We read this book last Jun. Can you recommend something else?
I nominate Patriot Games by Tom Clancy. I think It would be a magnificent tribute to this great author that recently died.

Ema - hope you don't mind, but I'm just going to put the first, Night Sins, in the poll.
Iris wrote: "I'd like to nominate COLD, Introducing Alex Duggins by Stella Cameron
"Iris. The book sounds very interesting. However, I can only find it on Kindle at this time, it's such a new release. If you don't mind, let's wait a couple of months so it's available in other formats to ensure everyone has access to it. Thanks.

Nominations will be open until October 4 and voting from Oct 4 until October 11. Please read rules below
General rules for Group Reads
1) If your nomination wins - you will be the discussion moderator.
2) One (1) nomination only per person. Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.
3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Goodreads for further review.
4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. Check the bookshelves to see the authors we've read in the past year.

5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).
Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. the last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.
Finally, a word about series - the joy or bane of a mystery reader's life! Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series or can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.
