Carson | 8 comments Lately I've been noticing that I'll be half way through a book, and even though I know I want to finish the book, I want to pick up another book and read it at the same time. I've done this a couple times before, but never all the time. I find it either gets confusing or I'll be reading one book a lot and abandoning the other book.

So I was wondering how do you read? One book at a time? Or multiple books at once? If you read multiple books at once please let me know how you manage I've been wanting to try it more and more lately because the more I read the quicker my TBR pile shrinks ;) Share your thoughts and opinions below! And remember read on!

Souad (readatfirstsight) | 2 comments I usually try to read one book at a time and if it's part of a series, trilogy etc. I even love reading them from back to back. If I get bored by a book, which I already started, then I tend to pick up a graphic novel, short story, novella etc. and finish reading that. Afterwards I find myself being interested in the first book again and finish reading that, too. I wouldn't pick up another book, if I'm loving the one I'm reading at the time. Or else I'll have the same problem as you and neglect one of the books.
Well, those are at least my reading habits. :D

adria I always tend to read more than one book at a time. This way, if I am not in the mood for one book, instead of forcing my way through it, I can set it aside for a short while and read a bit of another book. Then I go back to the first book and enjoy it to its full potential. Usually I can read up to three books like this. If I read four or five, inevitably one or two of them will be neglected until I finish at least one of the other ones.
However, that only happens if I read only physical copies. It's a lot easier to manage reading multiple books at once if beside the physical book, I listen to an audiobook or read an ebook. You might want to try that, maybe it'll help.

Carson | 8 comments Adria Maria that is a fantastic idea! I have plenty of iBooks I am interested in so that would be perfect to read one on my iPad and one physical book! Thank you!

message 5: by Geena (new)

Geena (geehyvn) I usually read two books at a time, sometimes three but mostly two. It helps to keep me interested in the story, so if i get bored, i'll switch it up between the two books. I also try to read multiple books that are quite different from each other, maybe like fantasy and contemporary. It's because i get easily confused by the characters and the world/magic system (if there's any). So reading two books that are completely different from each other makes the reading a lot easier. But mostly, when i read multiple books and i find myself losing interest in one of them, i put them down. I don't like forcing myself to read a book i'm not in the mood for.

Enrico Efendi (enricoefendi) | 36 comments I usually read a book at a time because if I read multiple books, I might get confused. If I have an ebook in my phone I only read it couple of pages only. It doesn't bother me at all. However, if I read a book and I decided not to continue finishing it, I'd rather pick up another book than bother myself finishing the book. I just use the easy way out. But this whole time, I read a book at a time, and I always get satisfied with the books I purchase after I read them one by one.

Julio Leal (julioleal) | 7 comments I really enjoy reading multiple books at a time, because more often than not after finishing a book I get this crisis of "What Do I Read Next GAHHH" So I just start the ones that really caught my atention. I also read very different genres so I don't have a problem switching between them.

But yeah..it's mostly 2 or 3 (tough last year I got five in a slump so that got very stressful) and I also read in various formats. My phone, Physical Book, I also kind-of get into audiobooks but they take me FOREVER to finish.

I try to keep it low tough.

Shatha (idrinktoomuchtea) | 14 comments I recently started believing in reading more than one book at a time. Because sometimes I'd read a book when I'm in the wrong mood and I'd end up disliking it, and then when I'd re-read it in the future I'd love it. Forcing myself to finish a book never made me like it more, so I like switching books when my mood switches.

Dora | 15 comments Ha! Good luck on shrinking your TBR pile ˊ_>ˋ
I aim to read one book at a time. But more often I find myself picking up another book of a different genre when I'm not into the first book. This does help my reading experience. I don't believe in forcing myself to finish a book if I'm not in the mood for it.

Another habit I have is I tend to read some graphic novels and manga series in between when I'm reading a book, especially if it's a chunky one.

Happy reading!

message 10: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Wilhelmsen | 1 comments I tend to read one book at a time.
but if I get bored by the story I might pick up another book and read that before I finish the first one.

message 11: by Jane (new)

Jane (scribblerjane) It's like this for me.
I read an emotionally intense book and have to take a break, so I pick-up another story until I feel like I can go back to the other one. So I don't read two emotionally draining books at the same time. Most times, one is fast paced while the other more of a slow burn.
I switch back and forth only occasionally though. If a story really captures me, I stick with it until I finish it.

Having too many books on hand can be over whelming and might make you get into a reading funk.
So even though it seems like it would be productive and help shrink your TBR, it's not the best way to do it.

But whenever you feel like you need to switch up, don't fear doing it either.

message 12: by Cristi-Lael (new)

Cristi-Lael I read several books at one time, but they are mainly in different formats. I read a few chapters of a middle grade book to my daughters every night, so those books often take a few weeks to get through. Then I also listen to an audiobook in the car with my daughters. Right now we are working our way through the Harry Potter series. (This is the 3rd or 4th time for me, but the first for them) Since we only listen when we are all three in the car, those books go slowly too.
For my own personal reading, I have an audiobook that I listen to when I'm alone running errands and doing housework. I use the Audible app on my phone for it. While I get through these faster than the audio I listen to with my girls, it still takes several days to a couple of weeks to finish it up.
And, lastly, I will read a physical book. These are the fastest consumed books, and I will often finish one in a day or so. I don't normally have more than one physical book going since, like you, I can find myself devoting all my time on one. Also, the stories get mingled and I don't like that. So, I'd rather push through and finish up a book so that I can start the next one without any worry. (For some reason, I don't have any issues with mingling stories with the audiobooks.)

But, for me, the biggest thing to remember is this: Reading is supposed to be fun. If I'm not having fun with the book I'm currently reading, then I need to pick up something else. Life is way too short to have to force myself to make it to the end of a book I hate.

Emily | 8 comments I usually do one book at a time and then if its part of a series I marathon the series until I finish it out!! Ive blown through my TBR in the past couple months because of reading this way! The marathoning of a series really really helps because it gets me pulled in and I just fly through the books withing days ^-^ I finished the whole mortal instruments series in a little over a week because I read them all at once???

message 14: by Bruna (new)

Bruna Rocha I've always read more than one book at a time, but it depends, I have a kindle that I take with me on my purse everywhere I go, so usually I'll be reading at least one book on my kindle and another physical book.

As far as reading more than one book at once, the advice I can give is to read books from different genres. That way is much harder for the stories to get mixed up.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

99% of the time I read one book at a time.

If I do read more than one at a time, it has to be one fiction and one non-fiction. I just can't keep the stories straight reading 2 fiction books.

message 16: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex I usually read at least 3 at one time. They are usually so different from each other I have no problems getting mixed up.

message 17: by S.J. (new)

S.J. Pow | 1 comments I enjoy reading three books at one time also. Usually a few different authors. : )
