Lauren Smith This is, in part, a replacement for the the New Release Book of the Month, which hasn't seen that much activity because of the cost and availability of new books. However, since some of use NetGalley, receive other review copies or buy highly anticipated books as soon as they hit the shelves, new releases might be better suited to buddy reads.

So, if you'd like some company for those reads, you can set it up here :) Just state what you'll be reading and when you'd like to read it. If there are any takers, you can then set up a separate discussion thread.

Happy reading!

Lauren Smith NetGalley users: because there's a higher chance that we might have some of the same books, what do you think of posting your NetGalley reading lists for the month? At least for those you'd be interested in reading with someone else.

Another SA book blogger (Melinda from The Book Musings) gave it a poor review. I think she said it was short on the ghost in ghost story. But I've got it already. Hoping I feel differently.

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I might read These Broken Stars if I have time. Luckily it fits into the word of the month. :)

Lauren Smith For January I'll be reading:

The Troop by Nick Cutter Snowblind by Christopher Golden

Might have to skip Snowblind though, since it can't fit into TJAILA, which looks like it will win WoM.

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
I'll join you for The Troop!

message 33: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Cool :) I'll be reading it in the first half of the month, preferably the first week. Is that ok with you? Although you can always join in later of course :)

Lauren Smith Lu, I finished my reading for the month (and the year!) so will start on The Troop tonight or tomorrow. I'll make a thread in the meantime.

Lauren Smith American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett These will be my February NetGalley reads:

The Martian by Andy Weir By Blood We Live (The Last Werewolf, #3) by Glen Duncan Strange Bodies A Novel by Marcel Theroux American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett and if I have time The Humans by Matt Haig

message 38: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments I have just finished American Elsewhere. Let me know when you start :)

message 39: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Will do :) I would like to review it on the 20th or 21st, so I will start reading that week, maybe Monday 17th.

message 40: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm sorry Chriz but I won't be reading American Elsewhere, at least not now. I should have a review copy but I can't find the file anywhere. I'm considering buying a copy, but I'm going to read something else for now.

What did you think of the book though?

message 41: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments It was a very strange read.

I am finding it difficult to get my review done. I cannot decide if I actually liked it. I am sure I would have dropped it if it was not an audio version. I find that I read outside my normal "comfort zone" when I listen to audiobooks.

It started off very slowly and is written in very descriptive, what I image, would be considered prose. Huge sections are just very flowery language describing for example the valley near the village.

Towards the middle, the story starts and it is very, very weird. Not sure why some would consider it horror though. It is at most very loosely based science fiction (aliens).

Maybe now that I have given you a loose description, I should try my review again.

message 42: by Chrizette (last edited Feb 22, 2014 11:42AM) (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments edit: just saw your review, Lauren :)

I see now in the previous post, that you also had THE MARTIAN on your list. Did you read it? I listened to it last weekend and I absolutely loved it. It was my first 5-star read/listen of the year and it is one of my new favourites. How can you not love a book with a first sentence of

"I am pretty much f*cked" :)

Also the narrator RC Bray is AMAZING. I got strange looks when I burst out laughing in public a few times. :) I had to keep from smiling as I was at work on Friday afternoon when I started. Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone :)

message 43: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith American Elsewhere - hmm, maybe I should just go buy it. I like strange books. Doesn't always work for me - the flowery language you mentioned doesn't appeal at all, for example - but weird things intrigue me.

The Martian - I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The humour helped a lot. at first I thought it wasn't that great, that he just tended to throw in a few mildly amusing lines here and there, but later on I was laughing out loud.
