Leahsmith | 3 comments The Pig in the Pond Big Book
It is a book about a pig owned by a farmer called Neligan. The pig watches the other farm animals cooling off in the pond and decides that she wants to be cool, so she does what pigs aren't supposed to do and jumps in! The farmer then comes along and takes off all his clothes and jumps in aswell!

A funny book that children in my reception class really enjoyed reading and they laughed when they saw the picture of Neligan's bare bottom! It has short sentences and repeated phrases which they thoroughly enjoyed joining in with and raised some interesting questions about our bodies and encourages children to think about how the human body can cool itself off. Be prepared to make lots of animal noises.

Leahsmith | 3 comments Billy's Sunflower
The book is about a little boy called Billy who has a sunflower. Through the course of the book the sunflower begins to die and Billy learns about the life cycle of a sunflower.

This story has very short and simple sentences and has beautiful supporting illustrations which help the children to follow the story with ease. It is a useful book to read to/with children who are just beginning to read for themselves and I found it especially useful when teaching the life cycle of plants and sunflower topic in reception.

Leahsmith | 3 comments Dear Zoo: A Lift-the-Flap Book

This is a book about receiving an animal from the zoo and having to sed it back because it was 'too tall', 'too grumpy' etc..

Children can join in guessing what animal is under the flap and there are lots of repeated phrases meaning children can easily join in.

A simple and interactive book to use with reception children. It is great for encouraging children to use describing words for the different animals depending on their appearance. The illustrations are simple and bold and the book presents opportunities to talk about proportions and appearances and of course, to make funny animal noises. The children loved creating their own Dear Zoo book as a follow up activity.
