It might be interesting for children to contrast this with a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling

Kervin | 14 comments The Chimpanzees Of Happytown The Chimpanzees Of Happytown by Giles Andreae

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The striking, beautiful and amazing pictures on each page clearly tells the story which will appeal to the children from nursery to about 8. It unfolds in a town where the mayor arrests a chimpanzee (Chutney) who had planted a tree in a town that looked dull and had no trees and all that lived there were sad. His neighbours continued to water the the plant and it blossomed beautifully into a large plant. When Chutney comes out of prison inspired by the colourful plant he urges the other chimpanzees to transform their town where they go on to rebuild their town by redecorating and painting their houses to make them happy. They also demolish the palace and build a beautiful playground for children. They are now all happy and celebrate with a party. The only unhappy person is the mayor who when he comes from holiday is arrested and when he later comes out, the new mayor Chutney shows him the beautifully tranformed town.
It will teach children about caring for nature and the the benefit of working together and digging deep into themseves to find ways to solve problems by being creative and imaginative. This will also help them to work independently and not rely only on adults.

Kervin | 14 comments My 10th review: The Gruffalo The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A clever mouse is walking in the woods and comes across various animals that would like to have it as dinner. The mouse cunningly invents a weird, monstrous looking animal as the one it about to meet for for tea. First it meets the fox, then the owl and thereafter the snake. One by one as she tells them about this monstrous creature, the gruffalo, she is about to meet they all go on their way scared of this gruffalo. As the mouse continues to walk the forest the gruffalo turns into reality and appears to her telling the mouse that it is his favourite food. The mouse has to come up with a quick story to save herself. The mouse tells the gruffalo that every animal is afraid of her and invites the gruffalo to follow her as she goes back the route she came. She meets the snake which gets scared as it sees the gruffalo so it disappears. The same happens as the mouse and the gruffalo meet the owl and then the fox. The mouse then tells the gruffalo that its favourite food is gruffalo crumple and her tummy is craving for her favourite food. This scares the gruffalo which flees and leaves the mouse free to roam the woods and enjoy eating the nut she finds.
A wonderful children's story with colourful and beautiful pictures written brilliantly for children up to KS1 to read and enjoy. Children could also discuss how the mouse cleverly turns down the invitations for dinner and could also be asked to role play the characters in this book. For the younger ones the story is read to them as they marvel at the cunningness of the mouse.

Kervin | 14 comments Let's Read! What the Ladybird Heard Let's Read! What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A rhyming brilliantly written picture book of a farm full of animals that in turn make noises according to how each naturally sounds. There is one animal the ladybird that is quiet but it hears and sees what is going on. One day two man with a van come to the farm with a plan to steal the cow. The ladybird sees them and hears how they plan to steal the cow by following the sounds of the animal in a certain direction making sure they don’t work up the dog as they approach the cow. She tells the other animals and hatches a plan whereby the animals will copy the sound of a different animal so that this will fool the man and trick them to unknowingly follow a different route that will not lead them to the cow. As they approach the animals the animals put their plan into action and the man think they are following their devised route to the cow but instead it leads them to the pond where they fall into and are caught by the police.
This picture book is suitable for the age group 3-7 and the children especially the younger ones will enjoy it being read to them. They could also learn how each animal sounds by pretending to be that animal and then make that animal’s sound and this could be done in the form of a game or play.

Kervin | 14 comments The Princess and the Pig. Jonathan Emmett The Princess and the Pig. Jonathan Emmett by Jonathan Emmett

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a wonderful tale which should evoke mixed emotions in the children. I would definitely put this one in the book corner for year 1 and 2 children. It relates a story of a poor farmer with his piglet Pigmella, sitting in cart on the straw resting in the courtyard of a castle. Above in the castle the queen was holding her new baby princess Priscilla who was cared for by her nannies. As the princess pooed in her nappies the queen repelled by the smell quickly dropped the princess in search of a nanny but did not realise that the baby had actually dropped out of the building. The princess fell onto the straw at the back of the cart thereby pushing the piglet at the front. The piglet lands in the castle onto the princess cot. When the queen comes back with the nannies and sees the piglet instead of her princess she cannot understand what has happened but the king thinks it’s a bad spell and the princess has been turned into a piglet for revenge by a bad fairy. So they care for the piglet thinking it’s their princess. Back at his farm the farmer is surprised to see a princess instead of his piglet but his wife convinces him that the piglet was turned into a baby by a good fairy as they desired a child but could not have one. So the princess grows happily as a normal baby with the farmer and his wife while, the piglet is raised as a princess by the king and queen with many people disliking her as she remains a piglet. When the farmer and his wife hear about a princess turned piglet at the palace the farmer realises the switch that happened. Being honest people they go to the palace to tell them what really happened but they are not believed so they stay with the princess while the king and queen raise the piglet as their princess.
I would let the children see cross-curricular links with science as they discuss and explain why the piglet was propelled up when the princess fell. Also would ask if they can explain why the princess was not injured when she fell and for them and to relate the story to see their understanding. I would also let the children understand the need to be very careful when holding babies. What a fabulous story.
