I really enjoyed Lightning Thief, but I've heard from others that the series goes downhill? How would you say the sequels compare to Harry Potter?

In my opinion, the series is nothing compared to Harry Potter. Yeah, it's good, but while Riordan creates a seprate world of Greek mythology- which partially already exists-, Rowling creates something entirely new. Also, everything that happens in the Percy Jackson series is leading up to that battle of Olympus in the last book. Everything has something to do with it- the lightning bolt being stolen in book one, having to get the Golden Fleece in book two, etc. In Harry Potter, yes there are a lot of things that lead up to the end battle against Voldemort in the same way. However, there's also adventures they have along the way that don't have anything to do with it. I guess all in all, Harry Potter is just a deeper series.

I've read the Hunger Games series and am re-reading the first one right now. I enjoyed the first one and parts of the second, but honestly I think a lot of Catching Fire went downhill. I agree that she couldn't continue with the third one in the same vein- Mockingjay was definitely very different and not as good as the other two. Collins made Katniss pretty whiny and in my opinion, the story wasn't laid out as well as it could be. There were some parts that were decent, but a lot of it was predictable and shallow. However, I think if the whole direction of the story had been changed, it would have been a nice conclusion to the series.

Alright I'm sticking with my decision to skip Mockingjay! I've always had trouble re-reading a book bc I keep wanting to skip to my favorite part, that's impressive that you can.

Yeah, sometimes when I read books for a second time it makes them even more powerful to me. Often I pick up on things I missed the first time, like foreshadowing.

That's a good point about the foreshadowing. Do you ever see things the opposite way i.e. something you really enjoyed the first read but felt clumsy the second time?
I just started reading the last book in the Infernal Devices series, Clockwork Princess. Now that I'm on the last book of the series, I do have to say that I think I enjoy the Mortal Instruments series more. Not that I don't LOVE this series, but I just love Jace and Clary so much, it would be hard to live up to my expectations now.

I just read Horns written by his son. They're writing is so similar!

Halloween is the best time to bring these books out :)

I guess you're right, but it's not as scary (yet) as I thought. I gotta toughen up!

I've never heard of that book! Who is it written by?

How is it not typical? Is it anything like Twilight? Because I really dislike Twilight.

yes they did make it into a movie.

Sorry I didn't see this post. Let the Right One In is not typical bc instead of making the vampires out to be demons and good v. evil it makes vampires out to be more or less infected with a disease that makes them want to kill but their personality is perfectly intact. I wanted more seduction and characters intersted in fighting the good fight, but it never came. That was exacerbated by the fact that there is no central point of view. There are main characters but the book jumps around to different ones (even the bad guys).
Now, I'm reading Children of Dune and about to start Legend.
