Will Aegon Targaryen be the one who eventually gets the Iron Throne?

Edgar There are so many characters who wanted to get the Iron Throne such as: Stannis Baratheon, Renley Baratheon (dead), Robb Stark (dead), Lord Petyr Baelish, Viserys Targaryen (dead), Daenerys Targaryen.... the list goes on. You can see that all of those characters (the ones that are still alive) believe that the IT is theirs by right, or they want it just to be powerful or even to get back at the Lannisters. Anyway, you hear mostly about those characters. BUT do you ever hear about Aegon Targaryen wanting the IT? Yes we know that he is in Westeros, but it seems more like Jon Connington wants the IT. Do you think that Aegon will end up getting the IT and all those other characters won't? If you think about it, most of the characters who have called themselves the King or Queen haven't been that patient and done what they did rashly. Meanwhile, Aegon Targaryen has remained in Essos with Jon Connington and as a lot of the Kings and Queens start dying like flies- Aegon arrives in Westeros. Do you think that Aegon will eventually get the Iron Throne?

Mitali I'm 99% sure that Aegon Targaryen is a fake - just a puppet controlled by Varys and Illyrio to further their own agenda.

I'm also 99% sure that Aegon won't make it to the end of the series alive, and probably not even to the end of Winds of Winter. He might die in battle. Or possibly, someone (a Lannister - or maybe even a Tyrell) might hire a faceless man (or maybe a faceless woman/girl) to get rid of this yet another contender for the Iron Throne before he gets too far. Or, most interestingly, he might be bumped off by Varys if he starts getting too uppity and forgets who his benefactors are.

Richard He has as much a chance as any character in this series, I'd say. Which means he's got a really good chance of dying and a small chance of success whether he's a proper Targaryan, a Blackfryre, or just a tool for someone else's attempted conquest of Westeros.

I think it's a bit early to tell what he'll do and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with him no matter how long he lasts.

One correction though, Robb Stark never wanted the Iron Throne. He was King in the North and intended to rule the North and let the rest of the six kingdoms squabble amongst themselves. He just wanted vengeance for Ned and, to some extent, the right to live free from the rule of Joffrey Baratheon.

Mitali James wrote: "If Aegon is really who he is claimed to be, how would that be proved? It's not like they can do a DNA scan.

Even if he is for real, why do Varys and Illyrio and whoever else is involved with hi..."

The same way it was 'proved' that Cersei's children were not Robert's. No DNA test involved there either. Even in the real world, DNA technology has been around only 20-30 years. In all the thousands of years prior to that, human societies have found numerous ways to cross-check people's identities that didn't involve DNA tests. Of course, such methods are not exactly fool-proof, and none of them can be as objective as DNA testing (which is why Cersei's children are still officially considered Baratheons, and are still on the Iron Throne). But that doesn't change the fact that anyone who cares enough to dig into Aegon's past and/or what actually happened to Elia's baby could probably find evidence that Aegon is not who he claims to be.

Varys and Illyrio know perfectly well that most other great houses of Westeros don't want a Targaryen on the throne (they each want themselves on the throne). But there are some exceptions: the Martells support the Targaryens, so Aegon has the automatic support of one of the seven kingdoms (Dorne). The Targaryens were the 'official' royal family for centuries, and in a feudal system, many people believe in the divine right of kings. So even if the great houses don't want a Targaryen back on the throne, there may be a number of other important lords who are willing to support Aegon's claim. Not to mention, the common people are also likely to support it (not that anyone cares about the poor smallfolk). And last, but not least, Aegon isn't planning on just strolling into King's Landing and asking for his throne back. He has landed in Westeros at the head of a conquering army. Whether or not the other houses 'want' him there is kind of immaterial.

Sarah I don't think he'll last long either. On one end I agree with (Jon Connington I think?) that he would make a fine ruler because he wasn't raised expecting the IT but rather has been raised to rule without knowing what his patrons expect for him. Therefore he has acquired a certain wisdom form his teachings that would prove unique. If he were to acquire the IT I think his schooling and training would benefit him and the Kingdom. Can't wait to see how it all pans out but I won't hold my breath!

Amber He has 10,000 men in his employ from the Golden Company. He landed on Westeros with 5000 and 1/2 missing, of which most were located landing seperately in Estermont, the few others unlocated are assumed to be spread across the stepstones.

So he has at least 5000 men with him who are ready to fight and win him the throne. Not as big as what Dany has, but fairly large really and these men are probably better warriors than most Westerosi considering they've been fighting more often for a longer period of time and have absolutely no qualms relating to honor or rules of engagement.

Nermin I really have no objection to Aegon taking the Iron Throne if he's truly the son of Rhaegar. But i wouldn't want a feud over the throne between him and Dany and possibly Jon Snow( if he turns out to be the son of Rhaegar&Lyanna).

Amber Yah I wouldn't be keen on a fued either. I want whats left of Targaryen's to make as much of a family as they possibly can as horribly cheesy as that sounds. LOL.

Nermin I'd love to see Targaryens ruling together actually like you know Aegon the conquerer and his sister-wives. Only this time Dany would be the Queen and the other two would be her nephew-husbands :D

Sin Tess I am sure that Daenerys will get the Iron Throne. The plot in Sond of Ice and Fire isn't just about who gets to win the throne, about about a change of generations, and a change of ideas and customs. Therefore, the throne must be ocuupied by Daenerys, because she is young, she is brave, she will understand what power is in the initiations jurney she is now having to take her throne, and most important, she has the blood of a leader.

Tragically for you, one of GRRM's themes seems to be "blood means nothing wrt leadership".

Thomas Edmund I think GRRM enjoys twisting obvious plots onto their heads.

At the end of #5 Varys sings the praises of Aegon as some sort of 'humble emperor' it seems likely this means either Aegon will die early, turn out to be worse than Joffrey or as above not be a Targ.

I'm starting to think that GRRM isn't going to put anyone on the throne, mayhap it will destroyed by dragon-fire, Westeros itself will be decimated or maybe by the end no-one will want the throne anyway.

Ken "Aegon" is a walking dead man. Jon Snow or Arya will get it in the end. Daenerys will be the final antagonist.

Amber Honestly, I'm voting for Dorne running the whole bitch at this point. Whether that involves Aegon or not I couldn't much care.
Just don't want to see Dany vs Aegon, that'd just be sad IMO.

Natasha First off, I completely believe that Aegon is truly Aegon Taragryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen. Why else would Jon Connington, a loyal friend of Rhaegar's go through so much trouble to protect him? Not to mention they kept his hair dyed, and there were others loyal to the Targaryens other than Varys who support him and have protected him.
Second, I hope that Aegon gains the Iron Throne, I really do. He has more rights to it than Dany, being Rhaegar's heir. Yeah, he was just introduced, but that doesn't mean he is an ignorant character. As Varys said, he has been shaped for ruling his whole life, and he, having lived a harder life, would NOT end up being a Joffrey. He comes for his birthright, and he has my full support.
Third, I don't think Martin is going to kill him off quickly (if he dies at all). I say this because he's not going to do what he did with Quentyn, introducing a character and then eliminating him right away. Aegon has a large role to play.
Fourth, Martin, in a Game of Thrones panel actually said that there will be a few others who sit the Iron Throne before the end. SO, with that being said, let's say that Aegon does eventually die (though I hope not), I believe at one point he will, actually, sit the Iron Throne. How long his reign will last is questionable, but I truly think he will be king for at least a small period of time.
Fifth, it's obvious that Aegon is one of the heads of the three-headed dragon, so this convinces me of his larger role. He's not going to die so early, he will be important. The Targaryens WILL rule again, whether it be Aegon, Dany, OR Jon (yes, I believe Jon to be the son of Rhaegar).
Long live Aegon Taragryen! True king of Westeros. [:

Edgar After quite some time, I believe he is actually a Blackfyre fAegon. I now believe in that theory. But still, I suppose the thread should be named: Will fAegon/ Young Griff get the Iron Throne.

Edgar Hang on, THE LANNISTERS WILL FINALLY BE KICKED OFF THE IRON THRONE? YAY!!!!!!
I've had enough of the Lannisters, especially Cersei. But they had it coming though with all of the deaths that happened.

Pretty sure they will be. Watch the Emmy Game of Thrones Panel and you can see what Martin had to say. Unless he was lying, which I doubt lol. But yeah, pretty sure the Lannisters will be kicked off at one point. I mean, their power is crumbling anyways.

Vahagn Tumanyan I like the idea of Aegon being who he claims. Firstly Varys is a Targaryen supporter and it is in his style to save the boy. Unlike the other cunning character Baelish who solely acts for his own Varys hasn't shown that inclinations(Probably will be a kick in the gut for me, if he does). They keep Aegon's hair dyed, which implies that he has the same pinkish( If I remember right hair, as Targaryens). John Connington who was Rhaegar's close friend wouldn't bother with a fake. The only thing bogus in my faith in Varys is Illyrio's involvement, but he could be just using Illyrio. IDK, I believe and I want Aegon to be an actual Targaryen.

That being said, I have no objection against him claiming the throne. Jon Connington, again is right that he is fit to rule, all that we've read about him makes it clear that he is going to be a character not unlike Rhaegar himself which means perceptive, smart, strong, fair etc.

If the throne HAS to be taken by a Targaryen I really, really, really hope it's NOT Daenerys for many reasons (I can elaborate on that, but this poll's intent isn't that). If however Jon ends up being Rhaegar's and Lyanna's son, I wouldn't mind him taking the throne either, but from the looks of it he's very much like Ned, doesn't want anything to do with IT and is committed to night's watch. In case he survives and becomes Azor Ahai reborn, he would probably kick some white-walker ass and stay in night's watch. But in that case I wonder what's Bran's story going to unfold like, I mean he seems to be with the old god type of creatures now, and it doesn't seem like they're as ad as Melisandre makes them to be. If he dies, eh so be it, I've had time to come in terms with that.

So basically yeah, Aegon for king. Yaaay.
