Hi David. The kindle edition on amazon.ca is $13.99 CAD. On amazon.com it's $1.99 USD. We really get slammed up here in the great white north when it comes to book prices :(

Judith | 559 comments Goodness that is a big difference in price.

Hi Judith. Yes, it's been a bone of contention since the early 1990's why we pay so much more here. That's when a movement began to at least remove GST (kind of like the UK's VAT) from the cost of buying a book. As one federal minister put it we don't pay GST on food because it's a necessity. So are books!

message 4: by Judith (new)

Judith | 559 comments I know about GST, my daughter lives in Ontario, I was horrified when I found out that the tax was on books and newspapers, even our government haven't gone that far, I hope that your government will soon learn the error of it's ways.

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 554 comments The prices jump all over. Sandy is correct for Amazon.com it is currently $1.99.

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 554 comments I would like to recommend Humber Boy B by Ruth Dugdall Humber Boy B by Ruth Dugdall

A child is killed after falling from the Humber Bridge. Despite fleeing the scene, two young brothers are found guilty and sent to prison. Upon their release they are granted one privilege only, their anonymity.
Probation officer Cate Austin is responsible for Humber Boy B’s reintegration into society. But the general public’s anger is steadily growing, and those around her are wondering if the
secret of his identity is one he actually deserves to keep. Cate’s loyalty is challenged when she begins to discover the truth of the crime. She must ask herself if a child is capable of premeditated murder. Or is there a greater evil at play?

Currently $5.39 on Amazon.com So just squeeks in as a value read unless it is more expensive elsewhere.

Humber Boy 8 is on my TBR list, so let's vote for it.

You are fortunate. We in NZ pay 15% GST on EVERYTHING - NO exceptions! Even, if you are a landowner, 15% GST on our rates which is a land tax, so a tax on a tax!!

The Ruth Rendell book to me via Amazon.com is US$7.89 (NZ$12).

Hi EG. I think we're all unfortunate. If both our governments dropped this obvious cash grab, just think how much it would help uni students, poor families & literacy programs as a start. Canada's not budging, wish you better luck!

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) I'm a starter for Humber Boy B also.....it is on my to read list. 8:D

Our government recently raised the tax from 12.5% to 15% and no amount of public pressure to make food tax free has changed their minds either.

Geri Windsor | 7 comments I nominate YOUNG NIXONas the Value Book and Apocalypse Third Edition or Apocalypse Second Edition for longer reading tastes, but all three have paperback, ebook and free Prime&KOLL library editions,so maybe they all qualify as good value. Many thanks for the kind interest.

No worries, David. If it's not a new publication, we have excellent libraries for free. If it's a little over the limit & not available there, I'm fine with picking up the kindle edition.
All the suggestions so far are new to me so I think I need to start a list of TBR's!

Lesley A little over a year ago we read the first in the DI Nick Dixon series by Damien Boyd, so we could consider the next in the series as a value read -

Head In The Sand (The DI Nick Dixon Crime Series #2) by Damien Boyd Head In The Sand

currently US$3.99 on my view of Amazon.com

This is NOT a nomination. But if anybody wants to nominate Bitter Fruits, I promise to read it too & comment on it.

message 17: by Juliann (new)

Juliann Johnson | 93 comments put it on my Amazon wish list...it's $12.95 but sounds really
like a good read.

It is a little pricy for me (I have been buying a lot of books lately and have a bit of a backlog) but I did put it on my library's purchase request list because it sounds really good. I'll keep an eye on it. If the price drops I'd be happy to nominate it.

Bitter Fruits It is a bit dear but I subscribe to Audible & to have somebody (actually several people with great regional accents) ride alongside me in my car & tell me a good story is worth a couple of lunches @ Panera.

But after a few times being apparently the only reader of the BOTM, I've sworn off nominating & think we should not vote for books we fail to read. (Yes, I've done it too.)

Judith | 559 comments I like Hilary Bonner books, I will go for this nomination

I need large print and the prices run from $17.00 US converting to 10.93 British pound! (used paperback)

Hardcover runs $36 converted to 23.15 British pounds. I assume it is the Large Print that is jacking up the prices.
To be fair the regular (not Large Print) are much cheaper. I am sure I have read tis as I read a slew of her books years ago. OH WELL.

Large print is my experience always more expensive. Do you access to it maybe through a local library? My library has a really good large print section.
