I've been trying to read a new book and finding it hard going: I wondered why.
I realized that I had no empathy for the main character: I didn't want to know what would happen to him next. I could not engage with him, his plight did not interest me.
My conclusion is that if I can't emote with the main character(s) than for me the book is a dud.
What engages you, when you start to read a new book? Is it the people, the setting, the weirdness? What impels you to read on?
