Maybe. Its possible. The book actually has a lot of evidence pointing the possibility of it being true. The books also had mention the church trying cover up the truth so its possible the church is hiding secrets.
Books like those hold some basic and important facts but the incidents which are mentioned may not have occurred.
The Cathar religion is definitely real and was widely practiced in the Middle Ages. As recently as the 1970's, a local expert Deodat Roché was said to be a practicing Cathar. Whether there are still cult groups practicing in secret is debatable, but locals in the South of France will certainly wink and smile whenever the old practices are mentioned. Records were only kept by the "winners" of the Albigensian Crusade, whose goal it was to destroy the Cathars, so a beautiful faith faded into history.
