Thank you Lobstergirl, hopefully we can find it because its really annoying not to remember

If so that's ex-soldier Simon Tregarth who takes a Merlin-ish portal into Witch World (Estcarp) series by Andre Norton. He's not supposed to have magic (men aren't in Estcarp) but turns out he does. As series progresses, hooks up with witch Jaelithe and they have triplets (or at least three kids really close Three Against the Witch World).

Definitely triplets--which again, was something that did not happen in Escarp. The first 2 books deal with Simon and Jaelithe. The next 3 with their kids who are now adults. After that, you get a lot of books, stand alone and series set on the Witch World. I believe that there are about 30 or so books total in the series.
Until Kris meantioned the Jamaican part, I'd thought about the Witch World books too. But Simon is actually from Cornish descent.

Estcarp the series, not Estcarp the place. I know they weren't born in Estcarp (and not until after Simon and Jaelithe left Estcarp ) even though they were raised in pre-Turning Estcarp. And Estcarp series more than once turns back to these same characters despite all the books and spinoff series. (I didn't remember if triplets or just close-in-age siblings because storyline skipped birth straight to when they were adults and it's been a long time since I re-re-re-re-read.). The brother in it is called Agamemnon, and it has a girl.
