Ummmm, I wouldn't actually know if what he was saying about landmarks and such on mars was true or false. The only reason i do know ghst most of it is actual true facts is because i have read a number of interviews with Andy Weir. And let me tell you if Mark didn't have his cracking sense of humor, i would have been hitting the snooze button on The Martian. Both pretty basic answers for me, but hey tell it how you see it right?!
The humor, specifically the pop culture references, adds tremendously to the novel. Without it, in my eyes, it would be just a bunch of scientific, techy mumbo jumbo.

And I totally agree without his fantastic sense of humor I would not have been a happy reader.
The humor, particularly his smart alec comments, is what made the book so enjoyable for me. I also think he paced the story very well. It seems there is always something going on. I really like the way MW narrates his actions, especially when things aren't going well.

I agree Kamas it's definitely the way Mark handles the lows that keep me reading too.
The humor for me really makes this book. I can't imagine how it would have turned out without it. I feel like Mark's sense of humor is carrying him through this unimaginable situation. He has such a great attitude for someone stranded alone on another planet and I think that's because of his sense of humor.

Great comment April and personally for me w/o the humor I would be snoring ;)
For me the novel is made more believable in part because of the scientific realities in the novel that include the actual Mars landmarks that are mentioned and visited.
Are there things about the novel that don't ring true for you or make it less believable?
What is your impression of Andy’s use of humor in the novel?

Would you have enjoyed reading this novel without his madcap type humor?
