Amber Edds Stark (amber_stark) Hi, everyone -

I have a lot of questions prepared for tonight's meeting! I liked that Lindsey shared questions before our last meeting, so while late, I wanted to keep up that trend. (I also know we won't get through all of these tonight, so maybe the discussion could continue here if people have more they wanted to say or can't attend.)

* At one point, Hazel says, "Cancer books suck." Is this a book about cancer? Did you have trouble picking up the book to read it? What were you expecting? Were those expectations met or did the book alter your ideas?

* Do you believe it’s possible for teenagers to be in love as truly as adults?

* Have you ever read a book and wondered what happened to the characters after their printed story ended? Do you think about Hazel? Related, how do you feel about fan fiction? There have been several spin offs from TFIOS.

* Green said the last line of his book was a “spoiler”: I do. He said: "It’s present tense. What do you say at your wedding? It signifies that something is still happening, that is continuing, that is ongoing, that is not over. She can still love Augustus and that there is still value in that love." Did you pick up on that when you read the ending? What do you think about that?

* Do you have any thoughts about a 36-year-old man writing a narrative as a 16-year-old girl? Who would you have guessed the author to be? Was he convincing?

* What did you make of the book's humor? Is it appropriate or inappropriate? Green has said he "didn't want to use humor to lighten the mood" or "to pull out the easy joke" when things got hard. But, he said, he likes to write about "clever kids, [and they] tend to be funny even when things are rough." Is his use of humor successful? How did it affect the way you read the book?

* Why does Augustus write Hazel a eulogy? Why not an ending of An Imperial Affliction?

* What do you think about Peter Van Houten? Green has said that Van Houten is a "horrible, horrible person but I have an affection for him." Why might Green have said that? What do you think of Van Houten?

* “What a day,” he (dad) said. “If we lived in California, they’d all be like this.” “Yeah, but then you wouldn’t enjoy them,” my mom said. She was wrong, but I didn’t correct her. How do you feel about the theory that "without pain, we can't know joy"?

* Talk about how you experienced this book. Was it too sad, too tragic to contemplate? Or did you find it in some way uplifting?

* What are your opinions on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? Hazel and Augustus were pretty self-actualized, to include their feelings about morality and how they faced facts, for not meeting safety/health needs.

* How did you feel about Monica leaving Isaac? Was it expected?

A side discussion last night revealed a few people who really did not care for this book, and I'm curious to hear more from people who weren't as thrilled and why they felt that way. I can't say it was my favorite book we have read, but I thought it was a compelling, and quick read.

Thank you, Jane! What do you mean by 'the followers'? The fan fiction spin-offs?

This is one fan fiction site, with a bunch of TFIOS stories: http://www.fanfiction.net/book/Fault-...
