Ioan | 4 comments Hello
How do you deal with authors that must have two (or more) different name versions? I want to combine them but keep all names, maybe based on a language or a book edition.

The exaxmple is
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

that in Romanian is spelled:
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

and in Russian is
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

Thanks

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments They are usually linked. The best example I can probably find for now is Sergei Lukyanenko. The alternative spellings are listed under the profile with links to the other profiles with both author names listed on each book, as you can see here. As far as I know, the most common spelling of their name is the primary author for each work (in this case, the English spelling is the most common), with the other names, as required, as secondary authors.

I haven't come across it that much, but I know that a lot of work often goes into linking author names and profiles. But before taking up such a task, it might be better to get more info from someone who knows a bit more about it.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Policy is to have English name in primary author slot when books have been translated into English, other language names are the secondary depending on edition language

Where never translated then only original language name is required

Edit: we never merge different language profile it is policy to maintain different profiles where appropriate. Having the roman name first on all editions allows for combining of works

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 9 comments Hi guys, I'm not wanting to become a librarian, but I was wondering if someone could correct something on here, or direct me as to how to do so.

I write under two different names, Nicole Field and Nicole Fergusson. I have one of my books listed under my name here: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

However, Q: Queermance Vol 1 is under a different author page. https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Is there a way we can combine? If I have come to the wrong thread for these, I apologise and am happy to be redirected.

Beth (bethjustbeth) | 1568 comments #71: If you've published under both names, we can't merge the accounts, but we can add a link to each, to cross reference. I'll take care of that, now.

Edit: I added a link to you GR author account on the Nicole Field page, but as a GR author, you are responsible for adding the link to Nicole Field on your author page...it won't let me edit.

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 9 comments Hi Beth thank you so much. Could you please link to instructions on how to link from my good reads author profile?

message 10: by Z-squared (last edited Oct 10, 2014 11:11AM) (new)

Z-squared | 8575 comments Hi Nicole,

You'll need to edit your profile description to include the following text:

Also writes under [ author:Nicole Field|8106571 ].

I added spaces between the brackets and the text so that Goodreads wouldn't automatically hide what I've typed while turning it into a hyperlink in this post. Make sure you do NOT include those spaces. Of course you can vary the "Also writes under" bit however you want.

message 11: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 9 comments Thanks again. One last question, I promise: am I able to now edit the Nicole Field profile and turn it into a goodreads author page, and if so, what's the process?

message 12: by Z-squared (new)

Z-squared | 8575 comments Good question! Should have included info on that. You can claim that profile, just as you claimed the Nicole Fergusson profile. You'll just need to use a different email address than the one you previously used. Once you're granted the claim, you'll be able to edit the Nicole Field profile as long as you're logged in under that name.

To claim the Nicole Field profile, go here:

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Scroll down to the bottom and click on "Is this you? Let us know."

T.C. Archer (tcarcher) | 6 comments Can I get some help combining profiles or modifying the name on a book? I write a T.C. Archer. However, the name is often listed at T. C. Archer, which doesn't allow me to list all books under one profile. This is the book I need moved:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

to:
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Thanks for your help.

Ren | 688 comments #13 @T.C.
The two profiles will need to be merged by staff because one of them (yours) is a GR author. You can request so in this thread:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Abcdarian | 26579 comments Re #13: I moved the book by closing up the space between initials. Since there were no fans or quotes on the author profile, it can be left and will disappear eventually.

lethe | 16372 comments #16 These profiles have already been crosslinked. We do not merge different names into one profile, if that was your request.

#17 Okay. I got it. but both are same author.

message 19: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16372 comments Yes, both profiles make that clear.

message 20: by Möhaned (new)

Möhaned | 2 comments Hi, I recently added the English edition of a novel originally published in arabic and I wrote the author's name in english. Meanwhile, an author profile exists with the name written Arabic which created a duplicate profile, please merge the profile and book of the english edition (Title: Some Cloves, Author: Noor Eldin El Sadik, ISBN: 99942650130) to the arabic profile (Author: نور الدين الصادق, Title: بعض هذا القرنفل) ie. The author would like the Arabic version of their page to be the official one with the english edition of the book along with its ratings and votes to be added to it. ِAlso, if the page can keep the author's name in both languages that would be great. Thank you.

English Edition
Some Cloves
Noor Eldin El Sadik

Arabic Edition
بعض هذا القرنفل
نور الدين الصادق

Redangel333 | 275 comments I am struggeling to find a solution as I am not very expirienced in author linking or merging.
While reading some books from Lukyanenko who was mentioned above I stumbled across his co-Autor of a series I read.
https://www.goodreads.com/author/edit... (this is the german writing)
He seems to have been added before as this one https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
I added his book to the correct series, but I only added the german addition as it was not yet combined with the russian one. Is there anyone who can help fixing that the author has two profiles?

As far as I have understood the german version must be merged to the english one I guess.

Unfortunately I do not know with which book the german translation needs to be combined, as I am not a russian speaker. Can anyone help?

GR dictates that if an author has been translated into English, the English name should be the primary author. I added the English name to the Arabic edition and combined both editions. I added the Arabic name as secondary author to the English edition as well (usually that doesn't happen because the English profile is supposed to be the main one).
https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...

Why did you add an Arabic cover to the English-language edition? Please only upload the correct cover for a particular edition. Covers are very difficult to replace on GR.

The ISBNs are not correct either. They should have 10 and/or 13 digits, not 11.

A profile page can only have one name, so both languages must have separate profiles.

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael Korleone (michaelkorleone) | 3881 comments #21 When an author's books are published in multiple languages - especially in English - then we use the English name of the author as primary. And we add this name as primary author on all the books of the author, irrespective of the language. This helps us to combined books from multiple languages.

I added Vladimir Vasilev as primary for the German books. I went through the author's Russian profile as well as the German wiki page of the book series but I can't find the Russian editions of the German books.

My Hungarian is non-existent :) but could this be the right book?
https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...

ETA according to Google Translate Káosz-Őrség means Chaos Guard, so I'm going to go ahead and combine them.

ETA2 Redangel333, please don't link to edit pages, only to show pages.
And profiles in different languages are never merged.

This very old thread is not the right one for your request. Please post in this thread instead: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 28: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (livka) | 7926 comments Erfan,
I moved the books to your profile.

Please do not combine different chapters again.
Only volumes with the same content should be combined.
I separated them for you.
