Leslie | 16369 comments Just a gentle reminder that this thread is for people who are thinking about reading something and want to know if others in the group would recommend it.

To share how you feel about what you have recently read and recommend it (or not), use the thread "What have you just read? Would you recommend it?" located here:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Thanks.

I wonder if we should rename it, as the title can easily be misunderstood..?

Could be a good idea. Something like "I'd like to read this. WHat do you think"? but maybe it's a bit too long

I think that's a good idea, Laura!

Good to know I wasn't misusing the thread. I'd started to think I'd asked in the wrong place.

By the way: no big deal if we get things wrong!!! No one here is the "Maestra con la penna rossa" and I'm afraid this will be lost for most of you: the "teacher with the red feather" is one of the carachter of Cuore by Edmondo De Amicis a very famous book for children in Italy by the end of the XIX Century which is not read almost at all now also in Italy. It is a pity; even if a bit "dated", too related to a country which is no longer existing, I think it was not bad at all ...

Yes, renaming is a good idea, I think. The two threads do have very similar names.

Oh, I am sorry I didn't understand. What a great idea for a thread. I have removed my message above.

No problem - I just had noticed that maybe newcomers to the group (like yourself) might have misunderstood this thread.

I do think renaming might be a good idea - how about "Should I read this?"

I've been thinking about reading that one as well. It sounds kind of like State of Wonder which I've been eying as well.

message 115: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Have any of your read this: The Hard Blue Sky?

Not sure if this is as good as the author's The Keepers of the House. I mean, so few know about this author and there may be a reason for that. Are Grau's other books just not as good?

Angela M @Chuck - I have read State of Wonder and I would definitely recommend it . I'm an Ann Patchett fan - great writing .

Chuck - could you please include the book title in your posts? Book covers don't always show up in the mobile app and we would all like to know what books you are referring to! :)

I liked State of Wonder, big fan of hers myself.I have heard that People in the Trees has quite vivid scenes on the treatment of lab animals. Don't know if I can handle that.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I have just discovered this newly named thread to find - oh no - yet more books to add to my TBR shelf!! And there I was, thinking I might be able to help someone out, having read something... ;)

Pink Too true Jean!

message 124: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Pink - I have just read your comment elsewhere where you say you feel you're always playing "catchup" with group reads. That really rang a bell with me - especially regarding the Daphne du Maurier readalong - where you are right on course by the way!! LOL

I did and liked it quite. Definitly not an Harry Potter sort of book. HArd, straightforward, but to the point I think. ANd well written, which is not bad these days ...

Or any of Morton's other books?

message 132: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Have not read the book but saw the movie which I thought was pretty good .

message 133: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought The Casual Vacancy was great! You have to see it as a book in its own right and not just a replacement for Harry Potter as it is completely different. I would recommend it

I read it and enjoyed it. It's a bit dark and dour, but an interesting story of relationships. The characters are convincing with complex motives and reactions.

Sigourney (psthebirdbites) | 226 comments Gemma wrote: "Who has read The Casual Vacancy?"

I loved it as well. It's dark and realistic though, so nothing like HP.

message 141: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments Interesting everyone's advice to not compare Casual Vacancy to Harry Potter. It didn't really cross my mind to compare the two as this is an adult book, HP is children's?

message 142: by [deleted user] (new)

I suppose it's because it's JK Rowling. I think some Harry potter fans expected it to be an extension and it's obviously completely different!

message 143: by Sigourney (new)

Sigourney (psthebirdbites) | 226 comments Yeah I don't think they can be compared, or should be, but I know a lot of people have been disappointed or annoyed because they've expected something more like HP and have been quite shocked by the content just because it's J.K. Rowling.

That's the first book in the series, isn't it? If I remember correctly, there were a few typos but not enough to get in the way. If you find it a real nuisance, I think you can return it to amazon to get a refund. I enjoyed the book!
