After his confrontation with the man in black at the end of The Gunslinger, Roland awakes to find three doors on the beach of Mid-World's Western Sea—each leading to New York City but at three different moments in time. Through these doors, Roland must "draw" three figures crucial to his quest for the Dark Tower. In 1987, he finds Eddie Dean, The Prisoner, a heroin addict. In 1964, he meets Odetta Holmes, the Lady of Shadows, a young African-American heiress who lost her lower legs in a subway accident and gained a second personality that rages within her. And in 1977, he encounters Jack mort, Death, a pusher responsible for cruelties beyond imagining. Has Roland found new companions to form the ka-tet of his quest? Or has he unleashed something else entirely?

I loved this 2nd book! Gritty and captivating in true Stephen King form.

Happy Reading!

Leslie Scales (leslielynn8) | 109 comments I've recently read this! Really liked it. More than the Gunslinger. I am just finishing up The Waste Lands so I was delighted to see its an upcoming book in this group!

Kelli (dolphinie13) | 16 comments This was actually the book that hooked me for the Dark Tower series. I really disliked The Gunslinger. I thought it dry and boring, with way too much unexplained. This book was engaging from the start, Roland was more likeable, and the introduction of the other two characters was wonderful! I especially liked Odetta, though (view spoiler)

Sarah | 1467 comments Aaarrggh. I am behind.

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments So join us Elly :-)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Where is everyone in the book and what do you think so far?

Jason Parent | 36 comments I still haven't started... so want to get to it, but other commitments keep it from my hands.

5 stars Cathie? Now your just teasing me. :)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Ooohh it's an amazing read Jason; right up there in classic King stlye; I think you'll really enjoy this one. (How's that for incentive? lol)

Jason Parent | 36 comments 5 1/2 more books on my review list, then taking a break to get to my TBR list, with this book first!

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments That's ok Elly, the thread never closes and will be here when you start to read The Drawing of the Three :-)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Wishing everyone happy reading this weekend! I am off to a Women's Spiritual Retreat and will be back Sunday night. Have a great weekend and be nice to each other, lol :-)

Debashis Chakraborty (debapnbgmailcom) | 10 comments Please help me so that I can read this novel through online.

Michelle (shelld79) I so wanted to join in on re-reading this one with everybody but I don't think there's any way I will be able to :-(
My reading has slowed down considerably this month due to work and other commitments but I'm going to check in time and again to see what everyone else is thinking about it.
I read it at least 10 years ago now and loved this series so much!

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments It seems a lot of the group is playing catch-up with all the great reads we have going on this month and because of other commitments.

Remember, discussion threads on books never close - are deleted (They may be moved to the Archived Folder, but you can always find them.)

Whenever you get around to reading the book you can post in the thread your thoughts and it usually brings a conversation back to life for awhile :-)

I was hoping to re-read too, but am not going to have the time. I'm looking forward to The Wind Through the Keyhole in December though!

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Remember, too, if you have read it once you can still join in our discussions and share your thoughts on what you do remember, lol.

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments What do you think of the new characters introduced in this book?
~ Eddie Dean, Odetta and Jack Mort?

Eddie and Odetta/Detta! I love these characters and the bond they all form as the ka-tet. There's stuff i want to say but i dont know if it would be considered spoiler or not... Im not sure if it happens at the end of this book or the beginning of Waste Lands. ahh.

As for Jack Mort.. he's essential to the story but I cant say i like him.

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I've started it, and I'm in 12%, for now liking it more than The Gunslinger. I'm intrigued and curious how the story develops.

ElvenRaven | 244 comments Oh dear, where has September gone? I haven't even started this book!

Sarah | 1467 comments Well I have just started - yes playing catch up. I loved the ending of Gunslinger - I found it epic, profound, and very spiritual. But I am loving the beginning of this book. What do I think about Eddie - well so far he seems like quite the coke junkie. (view spoiler)

Carmen (shutterbugg) | 70 comments After trudging through The Gunslinger, I started this book on Sunday and I'm happy that this is a wonderful read. I'm almost halfway through. Eddie at first sight seems to (view spoiler) I'm about to start reading about the Lady of the Shadows. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Ha ha I picked up on that too. I was like - excuse me this sounds more like some sort of dissociative disorder. But I know back then everything was labeled as schizophrenia. My mom was diagnosed with it after I was born in 1976 after some odd behaviors/disorganized thinking - never had a problem again. I have argued with my Grandma about this - she just doesn't get it. I think today it may be labeled under a post partum depression umbrella?
