How did you feel about the ending? Were you satisfied? Could you imagine an alternative ending that you would have prefered? Does this book allow for a good sequel? Perhaps the story from Lucy's perspective?

Karen Leonard (karen1278) | 428 comments The ending made me cry; tears of sorrow for the death of Isabel and her not seeing her "daughter" before she passes but tears of joy as well that Lucy searched for Tom and they were re-united.. Tears of hope because she will return to visit him again. The ending was very satisfactory; after all it would have been too tidily finished and maybe not acceptable if Lucy and Isabel had their re-union. This isn't a Harlequin. The ending gives you a feeling of hope knowing the love between Tom and Lucy will flourish; after all Lucy does need a father. The novel comes full circle with Tom and Lucy's first meeting and then their last; the last that the reader gets to witness. It also comes full circle for Isabel with her tending a grave at the beginning of the novel and then she herself has died. For me, there is no need for a sequel; I think the reader needs to imagine what the future holds for the characters and sometimes that is the way it should be left.

Anna (iudita) | 450 comments This was a tragic tale by design and a big element
of that way is the ending. A different ending would have really changed the essence of the story. As far as a sequel is concerned, it is hard to imagine one although I'm pretty sure I would read it if it ever came to be.
