Hi, everyone, good to see you here. Like this title, I have something need to figure out in this movie.
Yesterday my boy friend and I have seen a movie called 《The Devil Wears Prada》. It was a nice movie but we have fighted for one thing because different understanding.
At the end of this movie when Andy went to an interview in New York Mirror. And the interviewer asked a recommendation from Miranda. The actor's line is as following:
Interviewer(I): I called over there for a reference, left word with some snooty girl.
I: Next thing you know, I got a fax from Miranda Priestly herself... saying that of all the assistants she's ever had...you were, by far, her biggest disappointment.
I: And, if I don't hire you, I am an idiot.
I: You must have done something right.

See the bold sentence, I trust it was from Miranda and she gave Andy a good and fair recommendation. However, my boy friend believe that bold sentence was from the interviewer and Miranda only said Andy was the worst assistant that she ever had and didn't give her any good recommendations. And his reason for this is because Miranda have a very bad reputation, so anyone she doesn't like, they would hire.

Does this make any sense? I think every girl wants the good recommendation from her and if you are looking for a job, you don't have a good recommendation, how people can dare to hire you?

Although English is not our native language, I hope that some kind people can help us read and translate who has a better understanding about this brief dialogue from this movie and stop our fighting.

Thank you !!!

Hi, I really liked that movie and have seen it several times with my niece. I know the scene you are talking about.
The bold line is from Miranda. She is telling the New York Mirror in her own way that she was very happy with Andy and that they would be stupid not to hire her.
The last line was from the interviewer, telling Andy that he understood that Miranda really did think she was a great employee.

Well, then your boyfriend is the "idiot!"

lol - men like to get stuck in their ways! and their opinions.

have you read the sequel? i just read it about a month ago and it's an interesting follow up!

The book is more realistic than the movie!

This movie is absolutely one of my favorite movies .. Anne Hathaway can never go wrong in acting anything, any character.
I totally agree with Michelle, this is Miranda's own way in saying HIRE HER SHE's THE BEST

I read the book and saw the movie. As is always the case, the movie was a little different from the book, but I enjoyed both.

The book is more elaborate and sensational and it contradicts the movie a little at certain situations. But that happens with movies made out from a book, to suit the audience. The movie is worth watching for the sake of anne hathaway, and meryl streep.

I thought that this movie was cute. However, I did not think that it compared to the book! I found myself laughing out loud the entire time I was reading this book (much to the annoyance of my sister!), and didn't laugh nearly as much at the movie.

I am way late on this...but I think that line was indeed from Miranda. Without another added scene I could have gone with the other idea...but that scene in the New York street where they both acknowledge each other from the distance was a clue that deep within Miranda respected Miranda's strength in making the choice she did. So yes, I believe the line was indeed from Miranda, her way of helping Andy to follow a dream, the path she never did...a path with true lasting happiness and not just the superficial reward.

Why did Miranda Priestly call Andy Sachs her "biggest disappointment" as an assistant in “The Devil Wears Prada”?
Should you leave more than $1,000 in a checking account?
I think Mirada Priestly did that because she wanted Andy to get the job she was applying to. She always think ahead of what other people think or want, you can see why she thought that she saw a young herself in Andy, for doing impossible tasks, thinking ahead of her questions. Miranda liked Andy very much so she knew what kind of response from her will make Andy to land the job, because she's as manipulative as that.

All of you are misunderstanding the quote and what “disappointment” means in this context. Sometimes, parents might say their child has been their (the parent's) disappointment, not because the child was an idiot, but because the parents felt they hadn't been the best parent, weren't around for them, didn't give them the love they needed. So the disappointment is not the child's, but the parents, who knew they (the parents) could have done better. So in this context, Miranda said Andy is her (Miranda's) disappointment because Miranda failed Andy, didn't recognize Andy's strengths and work ethic, not that Andy failed Miranda. This is why Miranda said the publisher at the other journal would-be an idiot if he didn't hire her. If you understand “disappointment” in this light, then the ending makes sense when Miranda smiles in the car. All of the other responses don't make sense and can't explain the ending where she smiles. If Andy was the disappointment and Miranda wanted to get rid of her, why would she (Miranda) smile?

Lauren I actually disagree with that. Miranda I don't think is capable of that kind of self reflection. She was probably disappointed with the fact that Andy ...more

By watching the movie “The Devil Wears Prada”,what are the main reasons that lead the totally different results of Andy(Andrea)’s mission of “Sending Book to Miranda’s home” and “Achieving Novel Book for Miranda’s kids”.
