Jean (otakumom) Is there a book you want to read with a buddy or find a buddy to help motivate you to read that book that has been sitting in the to-read pile? Post your requests here and try your luck.

Once you and your buddy (buddies) have agreed on a book and a general timeline, feel free to create a discussion topic in this folder to help facilitate your buddy read.

Enjoy!

Jean (otakumom) Anyone up for for a buddy read of No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai?

I've always seen references to the work in popular culture and want to read it.

I was thinking about starting it in October to give any interested parties time to get their copies. We can break the discussions down to the following topic threads:

Prologue and First Notebook
Second Notebook
Third Notebook: Part One
Third Notebook: Part Two
Epilogue and final thoughts and impressions

This way, we can avoid spoilers as well.

What do you say?

Andy | 25 comments I'm in.

message 5: by Jean (new)

Jean (otakumom) Yea! Thanks, Andy!

message 6: by Jean (new)

Jean (otakumom) Oh, I forgot to mention a potential timeline. We can loosely set one week per section starting October 1.

It's loose one but something you can roughly work off of. You don't have to follow it faithfully but I find having some general guideline is better than nothing.

Open to any suggestions though. Thanks.

Julia (rakachinotohi) | 11 comments Hey I don't know yet if I'll manage in October with my thesis and all, but I bought 'no longer human' a while ago and really want to read it asap. So if you don't mind I'll join in if I find the time :)

message 8: by Jean (new)

Jean (otakumom) Hi Julia. No worries. We'll have the discussion threads open so jump in when you can.

message 9: by Athina (new)

Athina | 6 comments The book sounds interesting, thanks for proposing it! Also October should be ok - I don't have a copy yet, but worse case I'll buy the ebook.
One week per section seems reasonable, I'm in!

message 10: by Julia (new)

Julia (rakachinotohi) | 11 comments Maybe we should propose it as a group read?

Jean (otakumom) Julia wrote: "Maybe we should propose it as a group read?"

I think I just will. I'm so excited by the response! Thank you, everyone!

message 12: by Jean (new)

Jean (otakumom) We're start reading it in October as a group but feel free to comment when you can!

message 13: by Jean (new)

Jean (otakumom) Opps. That didn't make sense and I can't edit from my mobile.

We will start reading the book in October. It'll give you time to read and comment. Everything is broken into sections so that you can join in when you can. Hope this makes sense.

Jean (otakumom) It might be hard to get the book in a brick and mortar store; they would carry the graphic novel adaptation if they even carry the work at all.

Have you tried Amazon or Book Depository? Not sure about the shipping time for you.

message 15: by Andy (new)

Andy | 25 comments I found a copy at Half Price Books, but that's more dumb luck than anything.

message 16: by Athina (new)

Athina | 6 comments You're right, it's not the easiest book to find. My local bookstores didn't have any hardcopies, so I just bought the e-book from Amazon.
And since today is the official starting day of our reading club (right Jean?) I'm off reading already!

message 17: by Jean (new)

Jean (otakumom) Absolutely! Looking forward to you initial impressions!

No worries. Join in when you can! Looking forward to your impressions!

Tanja | 6 comments Seems this thread hasn't been used for a long time. I wonder whether there are still buddies looking for someone?
I have a tiny list of books I would like to read and would be happy to talk about it. :)

message 20: by Booklevard22 (new)

Booklevard22 | 9 comments I like the idea! I haven't tried again to be honest. Unfortunately, until the middle of December I am very busy with the preparation for the exams in the Art school. But it seems very interesting to me :)

Akansha (sheandherbook) | 1 comments Wow, I come across this dormant thread and would love to be a part. I am nee to goodreads so finding my way through is kind of difficult(I am not so tech savvy). It’d be nice to do this.

message 22: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 6 comments I'm happy to read you are interested. Im also reading a book at the moment so I'm thinking about December with the next book if that suits you. Here are some books I like to read:

Higashino Keigo "A midsummers aquatation" (detective crime)
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Banana Yoshimoto:
"Kitchen", "The lake", "moshi moshi" (contemporary)
https://www.goodreads.com/author/list...

Genki Kawamura "If cats dissapeared from the world"
(magical realism)
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Hiromi Kawakami "Strange weather in Tokyo" (romance)
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Let me know if you like to read one of the books.

message 23: by Booklevard22 (new)

Booklevard22 | 9 comments Hi! Sorry for the late response. Hm, "midsummers aquatation" seems very interesting. I am really in a mood for a detective story. However, Yoshimoto's books are something new to me. I will grab the chance and take my time to decide and I will come back after I finish my exams :)

By the way, when I have some free time, I try this riddle-book:

Do you know it?

message 24: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 6 comments That is awesome one of my choices I would like to start reading with. :)

I haven't heard of this book. It sounds pretty interesting but I am reading Japanese books only at the moment.^^

Tanja | 6 comments Hey Booklevard22,
I hope you are reading the message in time. I have mixed up the novels because of translation. What I wanted to read is this one:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
Tell me, if you still like the plot.^^
