The book I'm looking for is about a boy who follows a man, (I think he was described as floating outside his window) into another world to escape the boredom and rain in his own world. He finds that in this new world, he can have whatever he wants, staying in this old house that seems to know what he wants and hopes for and providing it. There's a woman there who cooks and takes care of things. (I think she dies later?) And a girl who is always intrigued by the lake where large fish swim.
There was something else about a perfectly carved Noah's Ark boat that the main character put into the lake and watched as the fish swallowed the pieces.
