Samantha, how long ago did you read this book? Was it targeted towards adults or young adults? Was this more of a fantasy or science fiction or something else?
This reminds me of "Slow Tuesday Night" (available legally here http://www.baenebooks.com/chapters/97...) which has the population divided into three classes based on the times they are awake, and of Dayworld, which has overpopulation leading to dividing the population by day of the week.

I remember something like this where they shared the same sleeping quarters- the day and the night people, but I can't remember the book. Perhaps we're remembering the same one.

I also remember one of the main characters, a female, had a short or deformed hand or arm or arms. The actual main character was a male, I believe.
