It really depends on what you are into. Celeana has a type of personality everyone might not like.

Heather- I highly highly suggest you read The Assassin's Blade before you read Queen of Shadows! There's a lot in those novellas about Celaena's past that's important to her character development throughout the series. Really for the rest of the series.

1/4 of Throne of Glass: (view spoiler)[So this is my first time reading this series and I (surprisingly) haven't been spoiled for it! I am LOVING it so far although I'm not 100% convinced about Celaena's character: her catty attitude towards Lady Kaltain Rompier, her vanity, her arrogance, and her constant posturing are so aggravating! On the other hand, I love her work ethic, her independence and the the fire that still remains in her belly, after a year spent in the mines. Her front reminds me a lot of Dorian's: his flirting with every female in sight seem forced somehow, like he is hiding the sweet person he really is and just letting people see who they believe him to be. I guess that makes them real and complex, and not a perfectly created character.

I don't know if I am subconsciously remembering a spoiler, or if it just really obvious, but I feel like a love triangle might be brewing between Captian Chaol, Prince Dorian and Calaena!

This is so far proving to be every bit as good as the ACOTAR series and I'm seeing some similarities between Calaena and Feyre's characters. There was also a reference made to fae, towards the beginning of the novel. I hope we see more mystical beings! (hide spoiler)]

2/4 of Throne of Glass: (view spoiler)[My favourite sorts of books involve challenges, conquests and games such as these so I was sure to love reading of these ones! Their training reminded of me of the same of those training in The Hunger Games.

Also, whilst I am not a fan of Lady Kaltain Rompier, or how Celeana acts in her company, I love that the addition of her character allows a different angle and a further insight into the world of court intrigue and politics.

Whilst the focus is mainly on Celeana, the passages from Dorian and Chaol's perspective note her beauty and how her clothes suit her well before anything else. Why can't they primarily note how skilled she is with a blade or something less sexist??? I am still enjoying this SO MUCH, but minor points, like these, really irk me!!! (hide spoiler)]

3/4 of Throne of Glass: (view spoiler)[The conquests achieved in the assassin's challenges seem similar, and yet more honest, than the games played by the nobles in the courts. Every character is taking part of a contest of their own and playing a game for their own means.

I love how the feelings between Celaena and Dorian and Chaol is hinted at and allowed to grow slowly, rather than being rushed and used as the central plot point to replace any lack of real story. It enforces the actual plot and does not overshadow it. (hide spoiler)]

None of them are good exactly, but Maas shows us their vulnerabilities along with their weaknesses and it makes me pity, if not empathize, with them. I think she is the absolute queen of character creation! She never makes anyone, not even the protagonist, wholly good and never makes the 'baddies' the obvious choice. (hide spoiler)]
