Group Rules & How To

Hi Shawn. I'm also an author, but first, I'm a reader. My genre is action/adventure thrillers. One thing that turns me off to an author is their belittling of their female characters. Steve White in his Remote Control made his two female characters appear to be idiots. He lost me right there at the squandered opportunity to make them credible and contributors to moving the story forward. I try not to make the same mistake. --Chris

My name is christine hatfield and I'm 27 years old and I work at the riverside elementary school where I help little kids that are handicapped and I play the piano and I'm making bracelets for the make a wish foundation of New Jersey and I have a medical problem

I also like the one (In the Best Families?) where Wolfe joins Arnold Zeck's crime network to bring him down. Again, it is fun to see Wolfe out of his chair, although I love the classics where he just sits around and thinks while Archie does the legwork.
I loved the series in the 80s (?) with Lee Horsley as Archie…he was gorgeous….

I got hooked after reading Silent Partner. Great read!

I am new to this group, I figured this was the group to join since I want to start reading crime thrillers and the such.
Look forward to new suggestions.

Thanks again

Thanks Isobel, I am new to these groups and I am still finding my way around. I look forward to joining in.

I've decided recently to be a more attentive reader and pay more attention to the writing itself as well as just reading to "see what happens".
I hope it'll help me to improve the novel I've been writing for years, as well as giving me even more enjoyment from the books.

That will all change when I get my virtual hands on the new Lee Child book on my kindle.
I'll post a review once I'm done with it.
Cheers
Steve

Cheers!

Leslie - There are individual discussions under the Group Reads section for the monthly reads.

I still have a heck of a lot to learn about writing, but... nil desperandum.

Example. Your comment. Was it directly addressed to me, or do other contributors get to see your feed? Or, am I part of a discussion group.
Bottom line, Lori, is, how the heck does Goodreads work? Is it a discussion group(s), a book review site or... what is it? I would be sincerely grateful if you could define/explain in as few words as possible. I guess I sound a little frustrated, huh? Not half as frustrated as I am trying to get my latest protagonist out of his next life threatening situation.

I am new at responding so I am not sure if I responded in the right spot. I just joined this group and basically was introducing myself. I could have put it in the wrong spot and that is why you are not sure if I was addressing you or not. I agree, it's confusing at times. I joined to get info on books and authors I read and also find out what is popular in different countries. I love Goodreads. It helps me to learn more about my favorite past time, reading. Joining clubs is not very important to me, but I do learn even more about finding new reading material.

I guess I got the wrong end of the stick. Never mind, I'm not into joining clubs either, but, Goodreads is very popular so I guess I'm in the minority. Thank you for your prompt reply, Lori. I appreciate it.
On the subject of your favourite pastime, reading, it is a drug isn't it. Seriously, as soon as I've finished one book, I'm hunting for the next. However, I'm getting to the stage now where I feel maybe I'm becoming hard to please in my favourite genre (crime, from the criminal's point of view, i.e. The Godfather). I even gave up on the latest Lee Child; it just did not grab me as his other 18 Reacher novels did.
Have a good night, Lori. Sorry, a good day, a bit ahead of you.

I'm not quite sure if my style of writing fits in here but so far I haven't found a place more suitable. But this is a place for some of the things I like to read.
I write in the action, adventure, crime thriller area (similar to the like of Clive Cussler). I like a fast paced story that will keep me engaged even When I have to put the book down for a while. I like plots that keep me guessing without being so obscure that I lose my way (scary as I'm travelling around the world on a yacht at the moment).
Well, that's me. HELLO.
Kevin Chilvers

Good luck. I'm also trying to market a book on Kindle and if you ever learn the secret of lifting the book from beneath a pile of several thousands of book let me know. The current No 1 in my genre can't even spell correctly on his / her book description. Keep plugging away seems to be the secret.

Hello Everyone, my name is Stacy. I am a freelance writer and an avid reader. I love mysteries, and lately have been really into medical mysteries/thrillers. I've been reading Lee Childs and also got a hold of an advance copy of a new book, The Organ Broker by Stu Strumwasser. It was great!! Has anyone else heard of this book? It is coming out soon but is about black market organ donation - totally fast paced and very real.

As you can see above my name is Bec. I've been reading Mystery books for many years.
My favorite authors are Linda Fairstein, Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson, Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen. It's nice to finally discover a group where I can talk about my enjoyment for mystery books after reviewing romance novels for the past four years.

Hi Stacy! I haven't heard of the Organ Broker -- sounds interesting. I've read some of Lee Childs but haven't gotten into it very much. As you are interested in medical mysteries, have you tried Kathy Reichs? Everyone knows about her series that became the TV series Bones but she also has the Virals Series. I've purchased the first book "Virals" but haven't read it yet, so can't give it a review but it might make interesting reading for you.

Welcome to the group, Michael! What are some of your favorite authors?
I've gotten quite into historical fiction as well.

DANE CURSE
Mickey Spillane meets DC comics when the world's greatest superhero is mysteriously murdered, and only a former villain turned PI can find the killer in time.

I love to read most genres, although lately all I've been reading is book submissions that I am editing or preparing for print.
I just published my first novel, Lex Talionis in June:

Anything else, please feel free to ask!
Thanks,
Aaron

Other iPhone user tips from the old thread:
If you access Goodreads through your device's search engine, you should be able to see a reply at bottom right of each post. At least this works for me on my iPad and iPhone.-- Cheryl
I think I may have "cracked the code", as they say!! As long as I follow a discussion and link to it via email, as opposed to notification or via my profile, I seem to get the reply to posts option. Yeah!! --Laura G.

How To Post a Picture.
TO POST A PICTURE:
◈ Click on (some html is ok) in the right-hand corner above a comment box.
◈ Copy what it says (by the bulleted word image and replace what is between the quotation marks, which I put in bold below.
description
◈ That is where the picture’s URL is inserted. Cut or delete that and insert the new URL. It should look like this:description
◈ Next, change the width and height measurements. You can get out you ruler and calculate aspect ratio, or just wing-it with a guess. I put the numbers in bold that you will change.
description
◈ You may have to fiddle with these numbers to get the desired size. For the smaller picture, I used width="200" height="150". For the larger picture, I used width="400" height="300".
◈ Use the preview before you post to check the size. The description section is the text that is displayed if the image can't be displayed.
