Leigh | 6291 comments Since the current version of this thread is looking a spartan since all comments by Jenni are gone, I thought I would create a new one. We will add to it as needed. Please post any questions that would apply to the entire group here.

Group Rules
Please put your thoughts down with reasonable grammar (not deliberate text speak) though the writing need not be perfect. No aggressive exchanges.
Use decent language; no swear words please. No sexually explicit posts please though adult books/romances can be discussed normally.
Personal attacks on posters will not be allowed. Be nice. :^)
Nasty/cruel posts will be deleted and the user removed by an automatic site cleaning program.

If you are an author and want to publicize your work please keep it to the Author's Corner and Giveaways section of the group board. Excessive spamming will result in being banned from the group.

iPhone users if you are having issues trying looking here:

Other iPhone user tips from the old thread:

If you access Goodreads through your device's search engine, you should be able to see a reply at bottom right of each post. At least this works for me on my iPad and iPhone.-- Cheryl

I think I may have "cracked the code", as they say!! As long as I follow a discussion and link to it via email, as opposed to notification or via my profile, I seem to get the reply to posts option. Yeah!! --Laura G.

How To Post a Picture.

TO POST A PICTURE:

◈ Click on (some html is ok) in the right-hand corner above a comment box.
◈ Copy what it says (by the bulleted word image and replace what is between the quotation marks, which I put in bold below.
description
◈ That is where the picture’s URL is inserted. Cut or delete that and insert the new URL. It should look like this:description
◈ Next, change the width and height measurements. You can get out you ruler and calculate aspect ratio, or just wing-it with a guess. I put the numbers in bold that you will change.
description

◈ You may have to fiddle with these numbers to get the desired size. For the smaller picture, I used width="200" height="150". For the larger picture, I used width="400" height="300".

◈ Use the preview before you post to check the size. The description section is the text that is displayed if the image can't be displayed.

Shawn Ebling | 1 comments hi I am new to this group and reading has become a new hobby. I dont know many mystery thriller crime authors. So far I have read a book from Lena Diaz, James Patterson and a few christian novels. I have learned that I really enjoy reading a lot. Can someone tell me more about Karen slaughter

Hi Shawn. I'm also an author, but first, I'm a reader. My genre is action/adventure thrillers. One thing that turns me off to an author is their belittling of their female characters. Steve White in his Remote Control made his two female characters appear to be idiots. He lost me right there at the squandered opportunity to make them credible and contributors to moving the story forward. I try not to make the same mistake. --Chris

message 5: by Solange (new)

Solange | 1 comments Hi all, I am also new to the group. I hope I am posting in the correct place. Like many of you, I love reading thrillers. I am a full time attorney by day and a writer of thrillers at night. I joined this group because I have a passion for what I do and am interested in sharing that with like-minded folks. Also, I am seeking mentors who have already published who can help with questions. I promise not to bombard you. Promise. Anyway, looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Diana Dunn (dianaxdunn) | 2 comments Hi all! I'm Diana and I am an author but I'll hold off on promos until I get to know everyone better! I love mysteries and thrillers (although not too intense - I used to love Patricia Cornwell, but since I've had kids, I can't take that sort of thing anymore). Lately I've been rereading Rex Stout and remembering why I love him so much. I look forward to bouncing around on here and seeing what everyone else is reading!

message 9: by Susan (new)

Susan I love Rex Stout. I used to like browsing through used bookstores and finding old books of his. I love Archie and his orchids. My favorite is when he went back to his old country (I can't remember the name now but it was part of Hungary). It was lovely seeing Nero active.

message 10: by Diana (new)

Diana Dunn (dianaxdunn) | 2 comments The book was "The Black Mountain" where he went back to Montenegro to find the man that murdered his best friend, Marco. I only remember because I *just* reread it a few weeks ago (my sister found it for me at a used bookstore).

I also like the one (In the Best Families?) where Wolfe joins Arnold Zeck's crime network to bring him down. Again, it is fun to see Wolfe out of his chair, although I love the classics where he just sits around and thinks while Archie does the legwork.

I loved the series in the 80s (?) with Lee Horsley as Archie…he was gorgeous….

message 11: by Susan (new)

Susan Thank you for prodding my memory. I always wanted to visit Montenegro after reading that. I agree that reading about Wolfe joining the crime family was good. I had forgotten about Lee Horsley. He was good. He was much better than Timothy Hutton.

Ellen | 3 comments One of my favorite author's is Jonathan ( sp?) Kellerman.
I got hooked after reading Silent Partner. Great read!

message 14: by Susan (new)

Susan I used to really like Jonathon Kellerman until I met him at a literary conference. He was one of the biggest aholes I've ever met and REALLY full of himself. I never read one of his books after that.

I finished all of Jo Nesbo's Hole series, and all of Karin Slaughter's over the summer. Any recommendations for a great series? Thanks, Best to all, Lucy

Joanna Howard | 3 comments I've just joined this group. I'm a dedicated reader; I get books either from the local library or on my Kindle.
I've decided recently to be a more attentive reader and pay more attention to the writing itself as well as just reading to "see what happens".
I hope it'll help me to improve the novel I've been writing for years, as well as giving me even more enjoyment from the books.

Stephen Henning (henningopolis) | 1 comments I'm Steve. I'm based in the UK.I've not read a book for about 4 months which is unheard of me. Am I ill? What's the group diagnosis.

That will all change when I get my virtual hands on the new Lee Child book on my kindle.

I'll post a review once I'm done with it.

Cheers

Steve

Paul Laville (plaville) | 5 comments Hello! I'm Paul, I live in Wiltshire in the UK and I love reading novels. I've only recently started getting into thrillers & crime novels and now I'm thinking "What have I been missing out on all these years??" To be honest I'll read pretty much anything as long as it hooks me from the first page and delivers a cracking good story without resorting to cheap tricks. Look forward to getting involved in some good discussions.

Cheers!

message 29: by Revell (new)

Revell Hello, I'm Revell (Rev) Cornell, an avid reader, and a 'can't stop writing at night' author. I live in England, will read anything that comes into my hand, but, in all honesty, if the story hasn't grabbed me by the end of the first chapter, I give up. Yes, I know that's probably not a good trait.
I still have a heck of a lot to learn about writing, but... nil desperandum.

message 30: by Lori (new)

Lori Hello from NY. Thank you to a friend who is also a member of this group. This is my favorite genre, but I am also coming out of my comfort zone (I teach and we really have to push most students to go out of their comfort zones.) I have recently enjoyed the fantasy genre (Charles deLint, Raymond E. Feist, Kelley Armstrong and Alice Hoffman) to name a few. I am hoping to find out about new and exciting authors and to chat about my favorites. I also have tried to read as many foreign mystery authors as well.

message 31: by Revell (new)

Revell In all honesty, Lori, and I'm not sure whether you will receive this comment or not, I feel I'm way out of my comfort zone with Goodreads. I'm just not comfortable with the structure of the site. There seems to be so many sub-sub-sub-sub divisions, with further related related related other divisions, that, as I say, I'm not sure who, if anyone, will be reading my queries or comments.
Example. Your comment. Was it directly addressed to me, or do other contributors get to see your feed? Or, am I part of a discussion group.
Bottom line, Lori, is, how the heck does Goodreads work? Is it a discussion group(s), a book review site or... what is it? I would be sincerely grateful if you could define/explain in as few words as possible. I guess I sound a little frustrated, huh? Not half as frustrated as I am trying to get my latest protagonist out of his next life threatening situation.

I am new at responding so I am not sure if I responded in the right spot. I just joined this group and basically was introducing myself. I could have put it in the wrong spot and that is why you are not sure if I was addressing you or not. I agree, it's confusing at times. I joined to get info on books and authors I read and also find out what is popular in different countries. I love Goodreads. It helps me to learn more about my favorite past time, reading. Joining clubs is not very important to me, but I do learn even more about finding new reading material.

message 33: by Revell (new)

Revell I've got to admit, I joined because I understood it to be a decent way to find out more about the writing industry. I have a few books up on Kindle, and, in all honesty, and in essence, I was looking for ideas on how to market my work on Kindle.
I guess I got the wrong end of the stick. Never mind, I'm not into joining clubs either, but, Goodreads is very popular so I guess I'm in the minority. Thank you for your prompt reply, Lori. I appreciate it.
On the subject of your favourite pastime, reading, it is a drug isn't it. Seriously, as soon as I've finished one book, I'm hunting for the next. However, I'm getting to the stage now where I feel maybe I'm becoming hard to please in my favourite genre (crime, from the criminal's point of view, i.e. The Godfather). I even gave up on the latest Lee Child; it just did not grab me as his other 18 Reacher novels did.
Have a good night, Lori. Sorry, a good day, a bit ahead of you.

Kevin Chilvers (kevinchilversauthor) | 7 comments Hello everyone,
I'm not quite sure if my style of writing fits in here but so far I haven't found a place more suitable. But this is a place for some of the things I like to read.
I write in the action, adventure, crime thriller area (similar to the like of Clive Cussler). I like a fast paced story that will keep me engaged even When I have to put the book down for a while. I like plots that keep me guessing without being so obscure that I lose my way (scary as I'm travelling around the world on a yacht at the moment).
Well, that's me. HELLO.
Kevin Chilvers

Good luck. I'm also trying to market a book on Kindle and if you ever learn the secret of lifting the book from beneath a pile of several thousands of book let me know. The current No 1 in my genre can't even spell correctly on his / her book description. Keep plugging away seems to be the secret.

Hello Everyone, my name is Stacy. I am a freelance writer and an avid reader. I love mysteries, and lately have been really into medical mysteries/thrillers. I've been reading Lee Childs and also got a hold of an advance copy of a new book, The Organ Broker by Stu Strumwasser. It was great!! Has anyone else heard of this book? It is coming out soon but is about black market organ donation - totally fast paced and very real.

Christine How do you define bad language? The first reviews I attempted to read apparently could not put their point across without much use of the 'F' word...does it no longer count as bad language?

Georgie Waters (g_waters) | 1 comments Hello everyone. I'm an avid reader of many genres. I tend to like fantasy as well as mysteries. Often I like what some may think of as "Chick Lit Mysteries" or "Psychic Eye" books. I see nothing wrong with a nice paranormal cozy, though I am open to any good book.

Hi Stacy! I haven't heard of the Organ Broker -- sounds interesting. I've read some of Lee Childs but haven't gotten into it very much. As you are interested in medical mysteries, have you tried Kathy Reichs? Everyone knows about her series that became the TV series Bones but she also has the Virals Series. I've purchased the first book "Virals" but haven't read it yet, so can't give it a review but it might make interesting reading for you.
